Job Title:

FLOATER PARAPROFESSIONAL

Classification: Full-Time, Hourly, Non-Exempt

Reports To: Principal

Overview

To provide flexible, school-wide support through guest teaching, student supervision, and classroom assistance based on daily staffing needs. Floater Paraprofessionals serve as substitute teachers when needed and provide essential coverage during lunch, recess, fieldwork, and throughout the school building. This role supports AXL Academy's culture, safety, and instructional goals through collaborative engagement with students and staff.

Essential Functions Guest Teaching and Instructional Support
  • Serve as a guest teacher (substitute teacher) across grade levels and content areas when classroom staff are absent.
  • Follow lesson plans and instructional routines to ensure continuity of learning.
  • Push into classrooms to support academic interventions, classroom management, and behavior support.
  • Assist with small-group instruction, student redirection, and hands-on learning experiences as directed by teachers or leadership.
Supervision and Campus Support
  • Provide supervision during lunch, recess, arrival, dismissal, and passing periods.
  • Monitor hallways and bathrooms to support safety, behavior expectations, and transitions.
  • Support fieldwork trips by actively engaging with scholars and collaborating with classroom teachers.
  • Ensure visibility and presence in student-facing spaces throughout the school day.
Collaboration and Communication
  • Communicate consistently with the Principal to receive daily assignments and schedule updates.
  • Work with Crew Culture Leaders and instructional teams to implement classroom strategies and student behavior plans.
  • Engage respectfully and professionally with all students, staff, and families.
  • Adapt to changing responsibilities and schedules with flexibility and a student-centered mindset.
Culture and Professional Engagement
  • Attend all required staff meetings, professional development days, and school events, including Student-Led Conferences (SLCs), Expedition Nights, and community gatherings.
  • Uphold AXL's restorative practices and equity-based expectations in all student interactions.
  • Support a positive, inclusive school culture and actively contribute to team-based responsibilities.
  • Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and reliability in all aspects of the role.

  • Build meaningful relationships with students through consistent presence and responsiveness.
  • Participate actively in school events, fieldwork, and classroom activities.

  • Contribute to smooth school operations and consistent classroom instruction.
  • Assist in implementing academic and behavioral supports that help scholars meet learning targets.
Qualification Requirements Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to follow instructional plans and adapt to multiple grade levels and environments
  • Willingness to work across different roles depending on school needs
  • Commitment to equity, inclusiveness, and school-wide professionalism
Preferred
  • Experience working with children in educational or youth settings
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills
  • Familiarity with restorative practices and classroom management strategies
  • Proficiency with Google Suite, Chromebooks, or educational technology tools
Physical Requirements

Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer, hand-held learning devices, and other classroom/office equipment. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. This position may include outdoor supervision and fieldwork participation.

Expected Days

Floater Paraprofessionals are expected to be in-person each day that they are requested that school is in session, including professional development days, student-led conferences, and school events. This position observes all scheduled school breaks and holidays.
