This highly rewarding position requires NO PRIOR CHESS KNOWLEDGE. As a Knight School Chess Coach, you will work with The Knight School’s proprietary teaching curriculum to provide developmentally targeted chess instruction to children from Pre-K, all the way up to middle school.

Kindergarten, Elementary, and Middle School students. Our revolutionary approach focuses on fun first, sportsmanship second, and chess ability third. We strive to ensure that every student that comes into our classroom is provided with the same high-quality experience that will instill an innate love of chess.
We firmly believe that this responsibility falls to the in-class coach at each program. To this end, we are committed to providing a high-quality work experience for every member of The Knight School Denver's team.
The Knight School is a national network of interconnected chess teams, classes, and clubs, each following the curriculum of The Knight School America. Now in 22 major U.S. cities, The Knight School was founded by Dr. David Brooks in 2007 in the city of Birmingham, AL. With over 6000 weekly students nationwide, The Knight School stands as one of the largest chess programs in the country, if not the world.
The Knight School Denver was founded in June of 2018 by City Coach Caleb Brasher. In the years since its inception, TKS Denver has grown to teach over 400 weekly students at over 30 partner schools. Our team, in turn, has grown now to over 15 excellent staff members, consisting of Coaches, Administrators, and several that serve in both roles!
This position is typically part-time with an average of 6-15 hours a week (or, 3 hours per class taught), although the weekly hours may vary depending on The Knight School Denver's need and the selected candidate’s availability. Working 24 hours or more on a weekly average qualifies as full-time.
QualificationsThe person selected as School Coach must possess the following skills and abilities:
- Excellent communication skills, as the School Coach will serve as Liaison between TKS and students, teachers, principals, and parents.
- Absolutepunctualityand attendancereliability; arriving late or missing class could result in unattended children or school personnel having to cover our class.
- Ahigh-energyandgregariouspersonality, able to create a fun and safe environment for our students.
- A high sense ofresponsibilityfor the well-being of all children in our care.
- Alove for working with kidsin a fun but structured environment.
- The ability to maintain order in a classroom or “classroom management” skills, although we will teach these skills.
- Professional demeanor and appearance;
School Coaches must present themselves as absolute professionals and meet the dress code and grooming standard of teachers in our schools. - High school degree or equivalent and some amount of college study; in progress collegiate study is fine.
- The ability to pass the TKS background check and any school-required background check; the safety and well-being of our students is our highest priority.
- Reliable transportation to cover multiple classes at multiple locations within a week.
The Physical Requirements of this position are such that the selected candidate must be able to:
- Lift up to 20 pounds
As a School Coach for The Knight School Denver, you will be trusted with the following responsibilities, in addition to any specific instructions provided by The Knight School Denver City Coach:
- Maintain the schedule with which the City Coach provides you, arriving at assigned locations for set-up at least 15 minutes before the official class start time and remaining at the location until all students are delivered to parents (or after-school care providers).
- Maintain high-quality classroom management utilizing the tools provided to you in training, while also keeping a fun-filled attitude to deliver a fantastic experience for enrolled students.
- Set up and run a video lesson produced by Dr. David Brooks, and supervise in-class student tournaments, focusing on the chess tactic taught that week.
- Commit to the full academic year, running approximately mid-August through May. Summer hours available June through early-August if desired.
- Travel to the assigned location, and plan travel times to account for slower transportation times through school zones and rush-hour traffic.
