As a high school counselor at Vanguard Classical School, you will play a pivotal role in nurturing the minds and hearts of our students. Our school, nestled in the vibrant state of Colorado, is dedicated to providing a rigorous education grounded in the Core Knowledge Curriculum Sequence, taught in the classical style.

As a high school counselor, you will play a vital role helping guide students through academic planning, career exploration, and social-emotional development. You will help students navigate and create course schedules, graduation requirements, college admissions, and personal challenges, while acting as a bridge between students, parents, teachers, and outside opportunities such as concurrent technical or collegiate enrollment.

Responsibilities
  • Assist students with course selection, credit recovery, GPA tracking, and ensure they meet all high school graduation requirements.
  • Act as a liaison between military, career, and collegiate recruiters; facilitate area college visits and tours.
  • Guide students through post‑secondary planning, including trade schools, military options, and 4‑year university tracks; assist with interest inventories, college searches, FAFSA, and writing recommendation letters.
  • Assist students in understanding and overcoming academic problems.
  • Counsel and educate students individually and in groups on course selections and their impacts.
  • Provide group or individual counseling to address college and career needs of students and their families.
  • Evaluate students' academic/career plans and assist them in setting realistic goals.
  • Consult with families and staff to highlight students' needs and discuss strategies necessary for improved social and academic performance.
  • Plan and organize classroom counseling sessions to address career and academic issues among students.
  • Develop and implement school counseling programs to meet students' needs for career and college readiness.
  • Prepare students for transition to higher institutions, careers, and colleges.
  • Ensure school college and readiness curriculum meets academic and developmental needs of students.
  • Organize seminars to educate students, parents, and staff on college and career readiness.
  • Listen to students' concerns and offer recommendations to address academic and other issues.
  • Guide and support school staff in implementing school advisory programs.
  • Assist students in writing applications for scholarships, college, and jobs.
  • Coordinate concurrent enrollment; develop student schedules and transcript adjustments.
  • Support the K‑12 Principal in the development of master schedules for high school.
  • Maintain confidentiality according to FERPA laws and act as a mandatory reporter as required by law.
School Counselor Qualifications/Skills
  • Desire and ability to work with students at varied age levels and diverse backgrounds toward accomplishing educational and career readiness goals.
  • Ability to organize tasks and manage time to meet multiple deadlines.
  • Effective communication with students, parents, school administrators, and other staff, including discussing sensitive topics.
  • Familiarity with student assessment tools, evaluating and interpreting standardized test results.
  • Knowledge of educational software.
Education, Experience, And Licensing Requirements
  • Master's Degree in School Counseling/Guidance.
  • Meet state certification/licensure standards.
  • Fulfill continuing education requirements.
  • Minimum of one year of school counseling experience.
  • Understanding and familiarity with computer applications and Microsoft Office or Google Suite; familiarity with Infinite Campus is a plus.
  • Problem‑solving, compassion, and communication skills.
  • Attend all required training for Aurora Public Schools.
