Job Description

Position Summary:

The Elementary Special Education teacher will provide special education students with learning activities designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. They will develop or modify curricula, prepare lessons, work in self-contained, team, departmental, or itinerant capacity, and collaborate with interventionists and classroom teachers under the direction of the Elementary Assistant Principal.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with students, parents, and staff to develop IEPs for each assigned student.
  • Collaborate with district partners to ensure services are provided as scheduled, facilitate meetings, and conduct problem‑solving meetings as needed.
  • Implement an instructional, therapeutic, or skill development program for assigned students and provide written evidence as required.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional strategies, activities, materials, and equipment reflecting student learning styles.
  • Assist special education students in regular classes and modify regular curricula as needed.
  • Conduct assessments of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities.
  • Present subject matter according to IEP guidelines.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet individual student needs.
  • Plan and supervise assignments for special education paraprofessionals.
  • Use technology in the teaching/learning process.
  • Establish systems and routines to create a safe, purposeful, and welcoming classroom environment.
  • Communicate regularly with families to share student progress.
  • Provide supervision of students during before and after‑school activities.
  • Own the success and achievement of all scholars in the school.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings and participate in regular team and department meetings.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement.
  • Provide or supervise personal care, medical care, and feeding of students as stated in IEP.
Must Haves
  • Strong passion for diverse populations.
  • Culturally responsive teaching aptitude.
  • Data-driven approach to instruction.
  • Experience with diverse populations and Title One schools.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field.
  • Experience with charter schools.
  • Previous teaching experience preferred.
Licenses, Registrations or Certification
  • Valid Colorado Teacher License with Special Education Generalist or Specialist endorsement.
Condition of Employment

Completion of the APS-sponsored Linguistically Diverse Educator (LDE) Certificate Program within the first three years of employment, starting in the  school year.

Full-time (186-day schedule)

Compensation and Benefits

$61,000 to $90,000 per year (BOE)

Participation in CO PERA program, including a PERA 401k contribution option.

Funding of 100% of individual medical benefits and a wide range of insurance plans.

Approximately 9 weeks of summer vacation, 4 weeks of school holidays/vacations, and 8 days of PTO annually.
