Location & Position

Principal System Safety Engineer – Safety Lead
Onsite, Aurora, CO

Security Clearance

Requires an active, transferable Top Secret U.S. government‑issued security clearance prior to the start date. U.S. citizenship is required.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement one or more MIL‑STD‑882E compliant system safety programs covering task series 100 (management), 200 (analysis), 300 (evaluation), and 400 (verification).
  • Create and update the program strategy to meet all milestones, integrating system safety features into the product in compliance with contract and funding requirements.
  • Develop a schedule and integrate safety tasks and activities into the Program Integrated Master Schedule (IMS); plan and manage the safety program effort within the IMS.
  • Coordinate safety budget and tasking with the responsible CAM/IPTL/product owner, including Earned‑Value‑Cost (EAC) adjustments.
  • Mentor junior safety engineers.
  • Participate in engineering review boards and configuration control boards to monitor design changes and assess impacts on the established safety program.
  • Establish a continuous feedback loop with functional and program management.
  • Lead and coordinate System Safety Working Groups between Raytheon and Customer representatives.
  • Escalate risks to the appropriate level and follow through on corrective actions.
  • Interpret system requirements, customer specifications, and military standards to recommend compliance strategies to program leadership.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across Systems, Software, Firmware, Electrical, Hardware, Environmental Safety & Health, Human Systems Interfaces, and Test Engineering to identify and mitigate risks.
  • Analyze engineering hardware, mechanical, and electrical drawings and schematics for fault tolerance, latent hazards, and safety requirement compliance.
  • Manage safety‑related interactions with suppliers and/or subcontractors.
  • Innovate better safety solutions and identify best practices to improve overall safety culture at Raytheon.
  • Understand and shape system safety/Human System Interfaces postures across the life cycle (design, integration/test, flight test, production, field, returns).
Qualifications
  • Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience developing and implementing MIL‑STD‑882E System Safety Program tasks and analyses (hardware and software safety related).
  • Experience with DoD System Safety Programs such as MIL‑STD‑882 and DO‑178.
  • Experience presenting safety status to approval authorities at technical reviews and safety review boards.
  • Experience managing a safety program and mentoring team members.
  • Experience collaborating with stakeholders across engineering functions to identify and mitigate risks.
  • Active, transferrable Top Secret security clearance is required at day

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience briefing at the military safety review board.
  • Experience with system and software safety implementation in an Agile Development environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and project management skills with the ability to manage a safety program and provide direction to safety personnel.
  • Experience with Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS) and proposal development.
  • Experience interfacing with Human Systems Integration, including execution of Human Factors Engineering tasks involving MIL‑STD‑1472.
  • Experience with Engineering Change Proposals, Engineering Review Boards, and System Safety Working Groups.
Salary & Benefits

Salary range: $107,500 – $204,500 USD.
