Position: Supervisory Healthcare Engineer (Deputy)

Overview

The Deputy Supervisory Healthcare Engineer manages diverse engineering programs—including maintenance, safety, utilities, capital planning, and compliance—at the VA Medical Center and CBOCs. This role oversees technical staff, supports research and academic integration, and acts as Chief Engineer as needed, ensuring safe, efficient facility operations in alignment with VA standards.

Qualifications
  • United States Citizenship:
    Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering or Architecture from an accredited program or equivalent qualifications such as passing the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam, holding a Professional Engineer or Architect license, or an Engineering in Training certificate.
  • Grade determination: supervisory healthcare engineer (Deputy) at GS-13 requires at least one year's experience equivalent to the next lower grade.

  • Knowledge of overall healthcare system resources management (finances, space, equipment, supplies, schedules, staffing).
  • Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, structural, civil, and other engineering/architectural principles, practices, and their applications as related to healthcare facilities.
  • Skill in effective communication and managing interpersonal relationships with internal and external customers, stakeholders, executive leadership, labor representatives and managers.
  • Skill in balancing priorities, delegating tasks and meeting multiple competing deadlines.
  • Skill in interpreting national policies and guidelines and applying them to local programs.
  • Skill in assessing evolving scenarios and using initiative and resources to effect resolutions.
  • Ability to analyze complex organizational problems and develop and implement effective solutions that result in efficient operations.
  • Ability to anticipate and develop strategies to meet short- and long-term strategic goals in a fluid environment.
  • Ability to ensure compliance with healthcare industry standards and regulatory agencies and organizations.
  • Ability to interview candidates, recommend appointments, advancements, or disciplinary actions, evaluate performance and identify training needs.
Physical Requirements

The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of offices, training rooms, and libraries. The Chief Engineer must work outdoors in all types of weather, may be exposed to moderate risks or discomforts in storage areas or hazardous waste sites. The work is primarily sedentary, but may require walking, standing, climbing ladders, stooping, kneeling, carrying light items, driving or traveling.
