Crime Analyst

Under general supervision, conducts a variety of crime and statistical analysis in support of crime analysis activities; collects and analyzes data describing crime patterns, crime trends, and potential suspects; assists with administering crime analysis database and tracking systems; assists with the collection and processing of evidence; assists in identifying and locating suspects, witnesses and wanted subjects; submits pertinent case information to prosecutors and other agencies;

and ensures work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures.

• Determines appropriate analytical methods and information‑gathering processes that are relevant to the cases.
• Collects, packages, and books evidence; researches and obtains required information and data for particular cases; and establishes other law enforcement agencies that should be involved with cases.
• Prepares and shows photo line‑ups to identify potential suspects, researches local, State and federal databases.
• Writes police reports to document findings, including supplemental reports, crime reports, and property reports.
• Discusses findings and alternatives with other Sheriff’s Office personnel in preparing cases and evidence and provides referrals to other agencies.
• Testifies in court proceedings.
• Completes evidence submission forms for laboratory testing; tracks evidence submission status; analyzes completed laboratory reports.
• Creates confidential law enforcement bulletins regarding crime trends, wanted persons and officer safety.
• Assists in generating and preparing local, state and federally mandated Uniform Crime and Arrest Reports; assists in developing year‑end statistical reports.
• Responds to telephone calls and questions from outside agencies and the public related to non‑sensitive crime information or analysis.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities for this position would be:

• Associate’s degree from a college or university in criminal justice, police science, or a closely related field; and
• Three years of varied analytical and technical experience involving the investigation of civilian crimes or similar types of cases; or
• Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
