This Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) posting will be used to fill temporary aide vacant positions in Pueblo. These positions may be based at multiple locations throughout the Pueblo area, and you may be required to work all shifts.

Terms of Employment

Temporary Aides are limited pursuant to the Colorado Constitution. A temporary employee may work no more than nine (9) months in a 12-month period. The 12-month period is defined as a rolling 12-month period that begins with the first day of work for the temporary assignment.

Application and Assessment

Responsibilities (Excerpt)

The Correctional Officer I (CO I) position maintains the safety and security of CDOC prison facilities. Officers support the CDOC Mission, Vision and Values with integrity and commitment while preparing inmates for community reentry. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Work directly with inmates in a locked facility
  • Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas
  • Man an armed post (requires annual firearms certification)
  • Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles
  • Operate a variety of mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms
  • Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule
  • Escort and transport inmates in authorized state vehicles
  • Monitor visiting areas
  • Conduct counts and maintain movement logs
  • Conduct searches for contraband (canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches)
  • Inspect facility and cells for health, safety and sanitation
  • Inspect inmate mail and property
  • Respond to emergencies and use established protocols
  • Document incidents and communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors

Positions may require working additional hours and/or shifts to maintain safety and security of facilities that are open 24/7.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED

Conditions of Employment
  • Applicants must acknowledge and agree to the Conditions of Employment within the application process.
  • Applicants must have valid U.S. work authorization; DOC cannot provide H-1B sponsorship at this time.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Possess a valid and unrestricted driver’s license; maintain a safe driving record and be able to safely operate a motor vehicle
  • Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must disclose information on the application
  • Have no felony convictions as specified by policy; restrictions apply regarding contact with offenders
  • Successful completion of a background investigation is required
  • All job offers contingent upon successful health screening
  • Successfully complete all modules of the CDOC Basic Training, including Defensive Tactics
  • Physical ability to complete Defensive Tactics (details of required actions provided in the original text)
  • Exposure to Oleoresin Capsicum during training and assignment
  • Willing and able to work all shifts, doubles, weekends and holidays; report to work during inclement weather
  • Willing and able to use physical force (as trained) and firearm as part of duties
