OverviewThe Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at CU School of Medicine has a faculty position available for a Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) at the rank of Instructor. The cardiothoracic surgery service at University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) is a high-volume, high-acuity service providing tertiary level care across the spectrum of cardiothoracic surgery. This is a night shift position based in Aurora, CO, with some weekend requirements.
The APP will be integral to ensuring high standards of patient care, safety, and outcomes in a high-acuity environment. The candidate will participate in protocol development and quality improvement for the care of cardiothoracic surgery patients. Eligibility for prescriptive authority is required.
- Evaluate and manage critically ill postoperative cardiothoracic surgery patients in the CTICU, including history, physical, chart review, and documentation with daily or status-driven care plans.
- Rounding, writing orders, managing extracorporeal life support/ventilatory settings as credentialed, and participating in discharge planning.
- Perform procedures as credentialed (e.g., central line placement, arterial line insertion, chest tube management, IABP management, bronchoscopy).
- Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and care planning; monitor progress, interpret labs/imaging, and adjust treatments accordingly.
- Document assessments and care plans in the EMR; communicate clearly with patients, families, and healthcare teams regarding goals and outcomes.
- Participate in research activities, quality improvement, and compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., JCAHO).
- Work onsite in Aurora, CO, with night shifts and weekend requirements as applicable.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Instructor:
- Current license to practice as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant
- Eligible for certification with independent prescriptive authority
- Sr. Instructor:
- Experience as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in Cardiothoracic Surgery
- Prior APP experience in a CT ICU setting
- 4 years of work experience aligned with position requirements
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact with a diverse patient population
- Ability to maintain quality control standards
- Knowledge of professional medical and surgical practice in cardiothoracic surgery
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of policies, regulations, and procedures to administer patient care
- Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments; safety awareness
- Ability to apply medical and surgical principles to ongoing patient care
- Experience in taking medical histories, assessing conditions, and interpreting findings
- Record maintenance, report writing, and quality assurance
- Team collaboration and effective communication with patients, families, and staff
- Ability to respond calmly in emergencies and to interpret and apply guidelines
