Advanced Practice Provider - Neuro

ICU Instructor

Job Summary

The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, Department of Neurosurgery, is seeking a full‑time Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to serve as a clinical faculty member in the Neuro ICU. The APP will work 24/7, providing inpatient medical care to patients with a wide range of neurosurgical disorders, including intracranial tumors, neuro‑endocrine tumors, trauma, CSF dynamics disorders, CNS cancers, and peripheral nerve injuries.

In addition to patient care, the APP will serve as an educator, mentor residents and junior APPs, participate in quality and safety improvement projects, and contribute to clinical research.

Responsibilities
  • Admit patients to the hospital from outside facilities or the ED.
  • Perform history and physical exam, patient assessment, order appropriate labs, diagnostic studies, radiology tests, and formulate treatment plans.
  • Perform emergent and non‑emergent ICU procedures per standardized protocols, including placement of external ventricular drains, ICP monitors, subdural drains, lumbar drains, central lines, arterial lines, chest tubes, intubation, lumbar puncture, shunt tap and adjustment, bronchoscopy, paracentesis, and drain removal.
  • Operate efficiently in urgent/emergent situations, following established protocols, remaining calm, communicating clearly, and documenting events.
  • Assist with transfer orders, discharge to outside facilities, and associated documentation.
  • Maintain communication with other health care providers and departments to ensure operational efficiency and consistency of care.
  • Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for own professional practice.
  • Act as a clinical leader and educator in collaboration with physicians, nurses, and the healthcare team.
  • Understand legal issues, including patient confidentiality and risk management, in all aspects of patient care and unit functioning.
  • Participate in research activities as requested.
  • Provide a service philosophy in all interactions with patients, families, and team members.
  • Utilize computers and telecommunication modalities to document, track, and convey information effectively.
  • Attend weekly specialty conferences, board review courses, procedural boot camps, and other professional development opportunities.
  • Engage in quality and safety improvement projects as requested.

Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a Master’s degree in Advanced Practice Nursing (Acute Care NP) or a graduate of an accredited program in Physician Assistant Studies.
  • Current active license to practice in Colorado as an APP or PA with prescriptive authority.
  • Credentialed by the appropriate national certifying body.
  • At least 2 years of ICU experience.
  • Proficiency in ICU bedside procedures (arterial lines, central venous catheters, chest tubes, intubation, etc.) and a strong desire to master Neuro‑ICU procedures.
  • Experience in a surgical subspecialty is preferred.
  • Intrinsic work ethic, self‑motivated, and resourceful.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally.
  • Proven ability to care for high‑acuity, high‑complexity patients in a fast‑paced ICU setting.
  • Desire to learn and perform Neuro‑ICU appropriate procedures.
  • Team‑oriented with ability to work individually and as part of an APP/physician/resident team.
