Vice Chair for Research – Open Rank

University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus – Department of Family Medicine (DFM) – Associate/Professor title. Position #, Requisition #38287.

Job Summary

The CU School of Medicine DFM seeks a Vice Chair for Research (VCR) to lead an active and growing research program. The VCR will provide administrative leadership for the DFM research mission area, participate as a member of the DFM executive leadership team (ELT), and contribute to funded research and other activities as appropriate, including clinical work or teaching based on candidate background and interests.

The role involves partnership with CU SOM, other schools, community and academic partner organizations.

Position Duties
  • Provide leadership for the DFM research mission area, including strategic goal setting, budget execution, metrics, benchmarks, and regular reporting.
  • Participate as an active member of the DFM ELT with weekly meetings and policy review.
  • Review and approve research mission area requests and projects, oversee budgeting, and determine policies and procedures.
  • Communicate research updates and disseminate findings in coordination with the Director of Communication.
  • Support the well‑being and professional needs of research area faculty and staff.
  • Progress personal research agenda, mentor junior faculty and trainees, and serve as a resource for health services research.
  • Secure federal and other large grants (PI/MPI) for health services and clinical trials research, and participate as Co‑I in active research projects.
  • Prepare manuscripts, edit, and innovate approaches to dissemination of results.
  • Collaborate with teams across CU departments and local organizations to conduct research and disseminate findings.
  • Build and maintain relationships with clinicians in the DFM and community clinical settings.
  • Provide professional development and research mentorship to junior faculty, research staff, residents, and fellows.
  • May provide clinical services in primary care or specialty clinics, as determined by the department and candidate.
  • May provide teaching in SOM or other clinical areas, as determined by the department and candidate.
Work Location

Hybrid – eligible for 3 days per week on campus with in‑person meetings as needed.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications (Associate Professor or Professor level)

  • Terminal degree: MD, DO, PhD, or equivalent in health sciences.
  • 5–8 years of experience in primary care or practice‑based research, implementation science, clinical trials, or community‑based research.
  • Track record of extramural research funding in primary care or practice‑based settings.
  • For physicians:
    Colorado medical license, DEA certificate, and full credentialing with UCH system.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience leading research teams in a DFM or similar setting.
  • Strong publication and grant‑funding record.
  • Experience with primary‑care improvement, practice‑based research networks, and teaching/mentoring junior faculty.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong leadership, supervisory, and strategic planning skills.
  • Teamwork, adaptability, effective communication, and confidentiality.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines; proficiency in training staff.
