This role is situated in Colorado Springs.
This onsite position focuses on designing, deploying, upgrading, patching, and maintaining highly reliable and resilient Kubernetes-based platforms that are crucial for the development, testing, security, and delivery of mission-critical software applications. The ideal candidate will play a key role in building and sustaining scalable containerized environments that drive current and future tools and services across the software development lifecycle.
We are looking for a candidate who thrives in a fast-paced Agile environment and actively engages in daily stand-ups, sprint and iteration planning, retrospectives, roadmap execution, and backlog management. This role demands close collaboration with cross-functional teams, a strong openness to feedback, continuous improvement, and the ability to effectively track and communicate progress, performance metrics, and potential blockers.
Key Responsibilities- Secure and configure containerized services orchestrated with Kubernetes and its underlying environment.
- Tune Kubernetes performance and identify issues using service and traffic metrics, establishing monitoring and alerting dashboards.
- Lead the lifecycle management of all containerized services utilized in the Kobayashi Maru software development.
- Conduct troubleshooting for containerized services, producing root cause analysis (RCAs) and postmortems for broader visibility.
- Establish Service Level Objectives and other Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) related metrics.
- Manage north-south and east-west network traffic to maintain all container-based critical services effectively.
- Ensure the Kubernetes environment is optimally running, properly patched and configured, with adequate resources for applications and scalability as needed.
- Design, secure, deploy, and manage the Kubernetes environment that supports 14 software product teams and thousands of users across diverse environments.
- Implement and maintain highly available Kubernetes clusters across both cloud and on-premises environments.
- Automate infrastructure provisioning, monitoring, and scaling through Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and CI/CD pipelines.
- Develop and manage Helm charts for application deployment and configuration management.
- Deploy and manage applications on cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, Google Cloud, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI).
- Monitor and troubleshoot Kubernetes workloads, networking, and persistent storage solutions.
- Implement Kubernetes security best practices, including RBAC, network policies, and container runtime security.
- Optimize performance and reliability of containerized applications across distributed systems.
- Collaborate with development, security, and operations teams to enhance Dev Ops workflows and cloud-native application delivery.
- Integrate Kubernetes with service meshes, logging, and observability tools such as Istio, Prometheus, Grafana, and ELK Stack.
- Participate in system upgrades, disaster recovery planning, and compliance initiatives including NIST, CIS Benchmarks, and FedRAMP.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to knowledge sharing within the organization.
- BS degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, STEM, or IT, with 12+ years of relevant experience, or a Master's with 10+ years. Additional years of experience may substitute for a degree.
- US Citizen with a current Active DoD Top Secret Clearance and SCI eligibility.
- Minimum of 8 years of professional experience as a Kubernetes Engineer with a proven track record in designing and building distributed systems for mid to large enterprises, including two years of SRE experience.
- Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA)
- Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD)
- Kubernetes and Cloud Native Associate (KCNA) certification or equivalent.
- Master's degree in computer science.
- Advanced experience with Azure AKS.
- Understanding of hybrid IaaS + external cloud integrations.
- Expertise in infrastructure design using cloud-native storage, networking, and security patterns.
At Leidos, we strive to innovate and push boundaries because the mission demands it. We're looking for candidates who are not just followers but disruptors ready to thrive in a dynamic environment.
