About the Work UnitThe Machining Trades III position works in the Colorado 嘉oka of Transportation's (CDOT's) Region 1, Section 5 Maintenance unit. The Unit exists to maintain the Colorado Department of Transportation highway system and facilities to as near original conditions as constructed utilizing available resources, personnel, equipment and material to ensure a safe roadway for the traveling public.
About the PositionThe Machining Trades III position will provide mechanical support to CDOT by installing, maintaining, servicing, and repairing heavy equipment and service vehicles to ensure transportation maintenance specialists' safe and productive operation.
Your duties and responsibilities- Design and fabricate special tools, parts, and attachments for equipment, as well as equipment repair for maintenance patrols;
- Evaluate whether component/part can be repaired or must be replaced. Evaluate whether it is more cost effective and/or timely to buy new component/part or fabricate;
- Fabricate component/part using a variety of tools/machinery including: mig welder, stick welder, press, iron worker, saw, plasma cutter, compressed oxygen‑acetylene cutter, lathe, milling machine, grinders, mag drill, scraper, etc;
- Provide mechanical repairs include the use of percussion tools and specialized testing and calibration instruments;
- Knowledgeable of different metals and alloys as well as the other welding rods and their applications;
- Able to complete specialized and complex welding projects; must be able to weld in all positions (e.g horizontal, vertical, overhead);
- Repair damaged equipment, such as snowplows, vehicle frames, wings, sanders, truck frames, mowers, loader buckets, pipes, fuel tanks, and hydraulic tanks;
- Perform chunks on various small engines, pumps, and hand tools;
- testing structures such as bridge expansion joints, bridge railing, cattle guards, and drainage grates;
- Schedule equipment for repairs; coordinate with shop and vendors for exceptional repairs, warranty work, recall notices, and for compensating for work overload;
- Research equipment work order history to aid in diagnostics and prescribed repairs; order parts, supplies, and materials for the repair equipment;
- Prepare work orders and audit work orders entirely and accurately using SAP;
- Travel to remote shop locations to include roadside assistance; often in adverse weather/road conditions to perform repairs on CDOT equipment;
- Maintain current knowledge of and abide by all safety laws, regulations, policies, and procedures and wear all required personal protective equipment;
- Provide information, education, and guidance to equipment operators as needed;
- Other job duties as assigned.
- Work schedule is Monday thru Thursday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm. During the summer months, the work schedule will be 4-10 hour shifts.
