Director of Design and Construction

UCHlth Leprino Building, Anschutz Medical Campus - UCHlth Metro Facilities Design and Construction, Aurora, CO

Pay: $144,872 - $231,795 / year. Pay is dependent on the applicant's relevant experience

This position is an onsite role and does not offer a hybrid or remote option

Reporting to the Senior Director of Design and Construction, the Director is accountable for leading the planning, design, and construction of all capital projects within an assigned UCHealth region. The Director manages the regional capital project portfolio to ensure all projects are delivered on scope, on schedule, and within budget—while meeting the organization's standards for safety, quality, and patient experience. The role provides strategic oversight, guidance, and mentorship to the regional project management team and serves as the primary liaison to regional executive leadership, ensuring consistent alignment with systemwide design and construction practices, policies, and strategic goals.

This position ensures that capital project delivery across the regional capital portfolio reflects enterprise-wide standards for quality, financial stewardship, and operational excellence.

Essential Functions
  • Regional Capital Program Oversight – 45%
    • Oversee planning, design, and construction activities for all capital projects within the assigned region
    • Lead and monitor project performance metrics including scope, schedule, budget, and quality
    • Direct the implementation of design and construction standards, ensuring consistency and compliance across regional facilities
    • Collaborate with regional stakeholders and executives to establish priorities and integrate capital projects into the annual plan
  • Leadership and Team Management – 25%
    • Lead, mentor, and develop a regional team of Senior Project Managers, Project Managers, Associate Project Managers, and other support staff
    • Ensure effective workload distribution, professional development, and succession planning
    • Foster a collaborative culture centered on accountability, communication, and continuous improvement
  • Strategic Planning and Collaboration – 20%
    • Partner with system-level Design and Construction leadership to support multi-year capital planning and strategic initiatives
    • Represent the region in governance meetings and executive discussions regarding project prioritization, delivery strategies, and capital investment decisions
    • Provide expert input on project delivery methods, risk mitigation, and contracting strategies
  • Governance, Policy, and Best Practice Advancement – 10%
    • Support system-wide initiatives aimed at enhancing project delivery consistency, process efficiency, and financial stewardship
    • Participate in the development and implementation of department policies, procedures, and technical standards
    • Contribute to enterprise-wide reporting and analytics related to capital project performance
Competencies
  • Proven leadership in managing large-scale, multi-site healthcare capital projects
  • Strong understanding of healthcare design, construction, and regulatory compliance standards
  • Strategic and analytical thinking with exceptional financial and budget management skills
  • Ability to build and sustain relationships across organizational levels, including executives and clinical leaders
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills
  • Commitment to continuous improvement, innovation, and standardization across a large healthcare system
Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in architecture, engineering, construction management, or a related field
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in planning, design, and construction project management
  • Minimum of 5 years in a leadership or portfolio management role
  • Demonstrated experience leading complex, healthcare-related capital programs

Preferred

  • Master's degree in a related field
  • Certification such as CHC, PMP, CCM, or LEED AP
  • Experience managing projects in a multi-facility or regional healthcare system
