Director of Operations

Location:

Aurora, CO

Compensation: $150,000–$200,000 base + annual discretionary bonus

Employment Type:

Monday–Friday, in-office with travel to job sites throughout Colorado

About the Opportunity

Our client is a well-established and highly respected mechanical contractor with more than 50 years of experience in the Denver market and 300+ employees. The company specializes in commercial mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, sheet metal, and air duct work and has a strong project backlog spanning major universities, hospitals, airports, manufacturing facilities, and commercial projects.

This is a newly created leadership opportunity designed to provide additional operational leadership while supporting the company's continued growth. The Director of Operations will report directly to the COO and have significant influence over operations, financial performance, business development, customer relationships, and team development.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead overall Business Unit operations, strategy, financial performance, and execution.
  • Oversee Project Managers, Operational Managers, and project teams, providing leadership, coaching, and performance management.
  • Drive business growth, customer retention, business development, and strategic customer relationships.
  • Own and monitor P&L, project costs, labor costs, budgets, forecasts, billings, cash flow, and profitability.
  • Establish and track operational goals, KPIs, and performance metrics.
  • Conduct project reviews, evaluate new opportunities, and ensure appropriate project staffing and resources.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to increase quality, efficiency, productivity, and profitability.
  • Foster collaboration across Operations, Accounting, Project Management, Field Labor, and other business functions.
  • Manage supplier relationships and negotiate for improved cost, service, and project value.
  • Build a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, leadership development, and operational excellence.
  • Mentor and develop high-potential employees and future leaders.
  • Report Business Unit and project performance to executive leadership.
  • Support business development efforts through relationship building, negotiation, and closing new opportunities.
Qualifications
  • Required:
    Significant experience within the mechanical construction industry.
  • Progressive leadership experience managing teams, operations, and/or a business unit.
  • Experience with in a larger mechanical contractor or multi-million-dollar organization; experience beyond a small/mom-and-pop environment is strongly preferred.
  • Strong P&L and financial management experience, including project and labor cost management.
  • Demonstrated business development and customer relationship experience, including negotiation and closing.
  • Strong understanding of commercial mechanical construction operations.
  • Established relationships and knowledge of the Denver/Colorado market preferred.
  • Strong executive presence, communication, decision-making, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to balance operational leadership with strategic business development.
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Engineering, or a related field preferred; MBA is a plus.
