Position: Nurse I - Veterans Community Living Center Fitzsimons, Aurora

This position is open only to State of Colorado residents. The recruitment may be used to fill multiple vacancies. This position will receive a short‑staffing temporary pay differential of 4% from July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026.

Office

Colorado Veterans Community Living Center at Fitzsimons – a 180‑bed skilled nursing facility serving Colorado’s veterans. The site offers long‑term care, short‑term rehab, and a secured memory care neighborhood, located on the medical campus with UC Hospital and the Aurora VA Medical Center.

Primary

Job Duties
  • Plan and coordinate basic nursing care and provide skilled nursing services to residents.
  • Administer specialized and routine nursing services such as medication and treatments within scope, including IV fluids (if IV certified).
  • Perform admission and daily assessments, documenting accurate care and treatment information.
  • Detect health status abnormalities from symptoms, vital signs, assessments, and lab results, and report to the physician.
  • Participate in work teams to establish best‑practice protocols.
  • Explain patient care before, during, and after contacts; provide active listening, communication, support, and encouragement to residents and families via phone and personal contact.
  • Administer medications within scope, observing the five rights, resident rights, infection control standards, and nursing policies; document all medications given and note reasons for scheduled medications not given.
  • Direct and implement nursing care ensuring compliance with accepted standards, policies, VA and State of Colorado regulations.
  • Identify problems with medication administration and participate in medication/pharmacy work teams to ensure quality improvement.
  • Provide infection control using standard precautions, dispose of waste, clean equipment, and maintain supplies.
  • Identify high‑risk residents for falls, skin breakdown, or other risks; initiate interventions and ensure proper use of safety devices.
  • Maintain updated skills, knowledge, and competencies through continuing education, supervision, literature review, and team development; provide orientation for new employees.
  • Communicate concerns to appropriate staff to prevent complications or ensure timely intervention.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Current, valid licensure as a Registered Nurse from the Colorado Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
Special Qualifications
  • Required to obtain a CPR card and maintain a Colorado RN license in good standing.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Two plus years of long‑term care experience.
  • Prior training with dementia.
  • Experience with post‑traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and veterans.
Job‑Related Competencies
  • Knowledge of the Elder Justice Act.
  • Knowledge of medication rights.
  • Knowledge of diabetic protocols.
  • Experience with electronic documentation.

  • Background checks include: CBI & FBI fingerprint check, Colorado Court Database check, Medicare Fraud Database, TRAILS Database check; and direct care to vulnerable adults requiring a CAPS check.
  • Requires State of Colorado residency at the time of application and throughout employment.
  • Motor vehicle check; requires valid Colorado driver’s license (or U.S. driver’s license within 30 miles of the CO border).
  • Must complete TB test and all required vaccinations.
