Position: Advanced Practice Provider (APP) / (PA/NP) Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology, Instructor

Job Summary

The Division of Surgical Oncology in the Department of Surgery at the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine has a 1.0 FTE faculty position available at the rank of Instructor for a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA). Under the direction of the full‑time faculty or designee, this position provides outpatient medical care services at the University of Colorado Hospital for the Pancreas & Biliary Multidisciplinary Clinic.

Primary functions include coordinating, triaging, and organizing patient flow as well as conducting patient visits under the supervision of attending physicians and surgeons.

Clinical Duties
  • Discussing program details, appointment flow, and planned tests with patients.
  • Recommending patient scheduling based on disease concern.
  • Ensuring all specialty providers are staffed in clinic each week.
  • Reviewing medical records to determine appropriateness for clinic.
  • Requesting outside diagnostic tests, pathology, or cytology as needed.
  • Generating weekly lists of patients to be discussed at conference.
  • Ordering and interpreting labs or diagnostic tests needed prior to multidisciplinary review.
  • Prescribing medications as needed, including pre‑procedure medications.
  • Performing peer‑to‑peer review or writing medical necessity letters for insurance pre‑authorization.
  • Communicating with referring physicians regarding patient referrals.
  • Independently performing age‑appropriate history and physical examinations for complex acute, critical, and chronically ill patients (invasive examinations deferred to attending physician).
  • Sending new‑patient letters to referring physicians using EPIC system.
  • Independent follow‑up of patients as needed.
  • Collaborating with team members after conference to finalize patient plans and assist with ordering tests and referrals.
  • Maintaining accurate and efficient documentation in EPIC system.
  • Contacting referring physicians or PCPs regarding any discovered medical issues or referring patients to appropriate specialty/provider.
  • Contacting surgeon’s office to facilitate perioperative management and OR scheduling.
  • Contacting medical/radiation oncology office to facilitate oncologic treatment.
  • Facilitating staff, patient, and family decision‑making by providing educational tools.
  • Providing patients with hospital resources as needed.
Research Duties
  • Participating in research in conjunction with faculty expectations.
  • Tracking patient outcomes and data.
  • Assisting with database accuracy and management.
Department Expectations
  • Compliance with hospital protocols and standards.
  • Attending departmental meetings on a regular basis.
  • Participating in Pancreas & Biliary Oncology program development, including input to institutional website and community outreach to enhance the multidisciplinary program.
Work Location

Onsite – this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, CO.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications for NP or CNS:

  • MSN required from an accredited Advanced Practice Nursing program
  • Current or pending Advanced Practice Registered Nurse licensure by a national professional organization
  • Current or pending Registered Nurse licensure in the state of Colorado
  • Admission to or pending admission to the Advanced Practice Registry of the Colorado Board of Nursing
  • Prescriptive authority required, can be pending on hire
  • 1 year of experience as a licensed NP preferred

Minimum Qualifications for PA:

  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program
  • Allowed to practice in the state of Colorado
  • Prescriptive authority
  • Must have at least 1 year of experience as a licensed PA

Preferred Qualifications for NP or CNS:

  • DNP preferred
  • Surgical Oncology / Pancreas & Biliary Cancer experience
