Colorado Mental Health Hospital in Pueblo (CMHHIP) is a 24‑hour behavioral health acute care facility that provides safe, secure, and therapeutic settings for patients with psychiatric and medical issues.
About the PositionPositions are full time with fixed schedules, offering essential direct care of patients across various units ranging from high security to low security settings. Staff may work in units with locked or unlocked doors depending on security level. Responsibilities include providing care to high‑acuity patients in secure environments or lower‑security community reintegration settings.
Responsibilities- Provide nursing oversight and lead workers over nursing personnel of three or more FTEs on a continuous basis.
- Provide clinical supervision and lead nursing staff during each shift.
- Serve as a resource and mentor, promote clinic staff efficiency.
- Oversee attainment of Unit/Program/Hospital/Nursing Department goals for the specified shift.
- Represent the Nursing Department in hospital‑wide committees and work groups.
- Provide immediate crisis intervention and respond to all emergency situations.
- Ensure nursing staff are properly trained and comply with policies and standards.
- Communicate changes to policies and procedures through roster, meetings, email, and individual contact.
- Function as charge nurse for the shift and report injuries or safety concerns.
- Utilize resources available in the Staffing Office to coordinate staffing schedules.
- Maintain nursing standards of care for the assigned shift on the unit.
- Adhere to CDHS Code of Conduct and CMHHIP Code of Ethics.
- Provide guidance for daily cross‑shift report and direct nursing care communication.
- Ensure unit staffing levels are maintained and accurate.
- Current, valid licensure as a Registered Nurse from the Colorado Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
- Two (2) years of professional experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position.
- Appropriate education may substitute for up to two (2) years of experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
- Demonstrated ability to understand and apply the nursing process to provide adequate patient care.
- Demonstrated ability to understand treatment plans and provide appropriate interventions.
- Demonstrated ability to direct the shift through training, mentorship, and development.
- Strong work ethic based on self‑motivation, loyalty, honesty, and integrity.
- Dependable, responsible, and adaptable.
- Previous state experience.
- Ability to see and hear in order to observe, address, and respond to potential breaches in safety and security.
- Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control, and/or restraint situations.
- Must be able to lift up to 50+ pounds on occasion.
- Full background check including CBI, FBI, Colorado Court Database, Medicare Fraud Database, and TRAILS Database.
- Direct care to vulnerable adults requiring a CAPS check.
- May work various shifts and must report without delay or interruption for emergencies.
- Physical requirements include performing defensive tactics, lifting, stabilizing, and standing.
- Must be able to read and comprehend English and communicate effectively.
- Work in environments with fluctuating noise and temperature; may be outdoors in inclement weather.
- Willing and able to travel.
- TB screening required of all new employees upon hire.
- Annual influenza vaccination and other required vaccinations per state of Colorado.
