Program Overview

As a cornerstone of the Pueblo community for over a century, Colorado Mental Health Hospital in Pueblo (CMHHIP) is a leading employer and provider of quality mental health services. CMHHIP is a 24‑hour behavioral health acute‑care facility that provides a safe, secure, and therapeutic setting for patients with psychiatric and medical issues. Services include evaluation and treatment for severely mentally ill patients and the goal of returning patients to optimal functioning and community reintegration.

The RN Residency Program is a one‑year program that equips novice RN’s with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide high‑quality mental‑health care in a safe and secure environment. The curriculum includes orientation, mentorship, reflection, theory, hands‑on experience, and an evidence‑based project to build confidence and improve discretionary judgment, organizational, and time‑management skills.

Clinical Direction
  • Lead nursing staff on the assigned shift and unit in collaboration with the Nurse Manager.
  • Assist in shift scheduling by applying acuity knowledge and staffing pools to maximize patient care quality.
  • Communicate personnel needs promptly to the Nurse Manager.
  • Ensure all nursing services are delivered correctly and in compliance with CMHHIP policies, psychiatric and medical nursing standards, licensure requirements, and governing bodies.
  • Notify unit staff of changes to processes, policies, and procedures via communication methods such as Cornerstone Rosters, meetings, email, and individual contact. Conduct individual clinical supervision sessions regularly.
  • Maintain regular communication with other disciplines and department leadership regarding nursing directives and disseminate information as appropriate.
  • Interpret leadership communications to understand changes that may impact nursing operations.
  • Act as the charge nurse, reporting staff injuries from assaultive/combative patients, absences, or other safety concerns to the Nurse Manager promptly.
  • Utilize resources available in the Staffing Office.
Department Standards
  • Maintain nursing standards of care for the assigned shift by creating and maintaining communication processes and following up with staff.
  • Adhere to CDHS Code of Conduct and CMHHIP Code of Ethics; maintain current knowledge of new policies, standards, updates, and literature related to nursing and specialty areas.
  • Notify nursing supervisors promptly of unit issues involving patients and staff.
  • Collaborate with all departments and provide assistance when needed.
  • Provide guidance for daily cross‑shift reports and direct nursing care and communication to shift personnel.
  • Ensure units are directed and staffed appropriately in accordance with hospital procedures, maintaining accurate staffing levels.
Staff Development / Competencies
  • Mentor, train, and provide immediate feedback to maximize productivity of assigned nursing personnel.
  • Ensure staff proficiency with electronic systems such as BEHR and Cornerstone assignments, including mandatory rosters and training.
  • Promote staff development by supporting compliance with hospital‑wide mandatory training.
  • Direct staff to follow manuals, standards, and regulations including DSM, Pharmacy Formulary, Treatment Plans, Infection Control Manual, Physician Orders, Court Orders, Joint Commission standards, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services guidelines, and various state policy manuals.
  • Provide direction and support to the assigned shift and act as a resource for staff.
  • Adhere to all regulatory guidelines.
Patient Care / Nursing Care
  • Provide nursing care on the assigned shift, maintaining a safe, secure, and therapeutic environment.
  • Respond promptly to patient psychiatric and/or medical issues; participate in Trauma Informed Care initiatives.
  • Document and monitor seclusion or restraint procedures and responses to respiratory, oxygen, and laboratory services after hours using AED data.
