As a School Nurse you'll play a pivotal role in guiding students on their journey to success. From providing crisis intervention to developing intervention strategies aimed at enhancing academic achievement, you'll have the chance to make a lasting impact on the lives of our students.
In our unique educational setting, students attend classes four days a week, immersing themselves in a rigorous academic curriculum while embracing the values of discipline, integrity, and excellence. As a School Nurse at Vanguard, you'll work alongside our team of educators to support students in navigating the challenges they may encounter both inside and outside the classroom.
Key Responsibilities:- Direct Student Care: Administering medications, providing first aid and emergency care, and managing chronic health conditions like asthma or diabetes.
- Delegate: Train, and continuously supervise and evaluate unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP) to assist the school nurse with the delivery of health services and medication administration, especially during field trips for students with medical concerns, through the nursing delegation process.
- Health Assessments and Screenings: Performing vision, hearing, and other screenings, and making appropriate referrals
- Record Keeping: Maintaining accurate student health records and immunization records.
- Communication and
Collaboration:
Communicating with parents, teachers, exceptional student support team members, and other healthcare professionals to ensure students receive appropriate care. - Health
Education:
Providing health education to students and staff, and developing and implementing health-related policies and programs. - Emergency Response: Participating in emergency response planning and training.
- Liaison Role: Serving as a liaison between the school, students, families, and community healthcare providers.
- Registered Nurse (RN) License: Must be a licensed RN in Colorado.
- CDE Special Service Provider License: Requires obtaining a Special Service Provider License with the School Nurse Endorsement from the Colorado Department of Education (CDE).
- New school nurses must apply with the Colorado Department of Education for an Initial Special Service Provider License. Registered Nurses with an active RN license may apply.
- Requirements for Special Service Provider Endorsement as a School Nurse:
- Associate's or higher degree in nursing
- A valid RN license to practice in Colorado pursuant to the Nurse Practice Act , et. seq., C.R.S.) or a valid mulit-state license and able to practice in Colorado pursuant to the nurse licensure compact (24-60-3802, C.R.S.)
- Important Note:
Registered nurses must maintain an active DORA license to practice nursing in Colorado in addition to the CDE-issue special services license/school nurse. Those holding mulit-state licenses issued by another state must apply for a Colorado DORA-issue RN license within 60 days, as per the Nurse License Compact.
