Job Overview
Perioperative Advanced Practice Providers (APP) are members of the perioperative health care team responsible for the preoperative optimization and management of surgical patients in collaboration with nursing, anesthesia, and surgical teams within a pediatric care environment. APPs in this clinical role are responsible for completing the history and physical examination on surgical candidates, coordinating with the Surgical and Anesthesia teams to meet the pre‑surgical needs of patients, including consulting with specialists, ordering and monitoring laboratory studies, and rescheduling patients when appropriate to ensure safe and timely surgical care.
Responsibilities of the Perioperative APP role include management of chronic/acute illness and disease, leadership in pediatric clinical practice, arrangement of clinical consultation, promotion of education, involvement in scholarly work and service activities, fiscal responsibility, and dedication to professional growth and development within a child‑focused healthcare setting.

- Conducts comprehensive preoperative assessments, including history and physical examinations, develops and implements care plans, orders and interprets diagnostic studies, and collaborates with surgical and anesthesia teams to ensure patients are optimized for surgery.
- Provides age-appropriate, culturally sensitive, family-centered care and advocates for the patient and family throughout the care experience.
- Uses evidence-based practice, critical thinking, and clinical decision support tools to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care within a pediatric care environment.
- Coordinates and communicates effectively with the healthcare team to ensure safe, integrated perioperative care.
- Educates patients and families to support understanding, self-management, and readiness for surgery and recovery.
- Makes referrals and consults with specialists or services to support safe surgical planning.
- Participates in quality improvement and safety initiatives to enhance perioperative outcomes and practice standards in a pediatric clinical setting.
- Maintains clinical competence through ongoing learning and participation in educational and professional development activities.
- Demonstrates professionalism and positive team engagement in all interactions.
- Serves as a resource and mentor to nursing and clinical staff, including precepting as appropriate.
- Contributes to departmental or organizational committees, projects, or activities that advance perioperative practice.
- Degrees
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master's Degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program: (PNP) Pediatric Nurse Practitioner or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP).
- (PNP) Pediatric Nurse Practitioner preferred
- Experience
- Three (3) years combined experience as RN, PNP, or FNP.
- Licenses & Certifications
- Certification as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (Acute Care or Primary Care) or Family Nurse Practitioner
- BLS/CPR from the American Heart Association, with at least six (6) months remaining before expiration from time of hire
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required.
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license in the state of Colorado (or able to obtain prior to start).
- Prescriptive Authority/DEA within 6-months of hire.
