Position: TEMPORARY Invasive Species Outreach & Education Technician Mesa County.

Department Information

Temporary position (9 months or less) – $18.00 per hour.

Employment starts 05/03/2026 through 10/31/2026.

Job Overview

Primary responsibility is to support the State Invasive Species Program through public outreach to non‑motorized water recreation groups. Work includes trailering a mobile self‑serve cleaning system throughout the Western Slope to educate outfitters, anglers, hunters, and non‑motorized watercraft users about aquatic invasive species and how to properly clean, drain, and dry their equipment.

Outreach will include providing surveys, attending user‑group events and expositions, and educating recreational outfitters. The position reports to the James M. Robb Corn Lake State Park for assignment. Boat inspection and outreach training will be provided. When outreach is not needed, the position will support the Program Manager and Invasive Species Specialists by performing tasks such as watercraft inspection and decontamination, quality‑control assessment, inventory management, reviewing and editing technical reports, distributing supplies to field locations, and data entry.

This position requires regular overnight travel and long‑distance driving. Early morning, evening & weekend work is required.

Responsibilities
  • Support State Invasive Species Program through outreach to non‑motorized water recreation groups.
  • Trail a mobile self‑serve cleaning system throughout the Western Slope.
  • Provide surveys, attend user‑group events and expositions.
  • Educate outfits regarding cleaning procedures.
  • Perform watercraft inspection and decontamination.
  • Conduct quality‑control assessment.
  • Manage inventory.
  • Review and edit technical reports.
  • Distribute supplies to field locations.
  • Enter data.
  • Travel extensively, including overnight stays.
  • Work early mornings, evenings, and weekends as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Good driving record; must travel extensively with overnight stays.
  • Ability to drive long hours and remain alert.
  • Ability to trailer decontamination units on highways and steep mountain roads.
  • Willingness to be flexible with weekday and weekend schedules dictated by weather.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences or higher education.
  • Compliant with DNR fleet and driving standards, maintaining a safe driving record.
