Position: CDOC Correctional Officer I - Buena Vista

Overview

The Correctional Officer I (CO I) position maintains the safety and security of Colorado Department of Corrections’ (CDOC) prison facilities throughout the state. Correctional Officers support the CDOC Mission, Vision, and Values with integrity and commitment while preparing inmates for community re‑entry.

Responsibilities
  • Work directly with inmates in a locked facility.
  • Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas.
  • Man an armed post (requires annual firearms certification).
  • Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles.
  • Operate mechanical doors, security devices, equipment, and alarms.
  • Control inmate movement throughout the daily schedule.
  • Escort and transport inmates in authorized state vehicles.
  • Monitor visiting areas.
  • Conduct formal, informal, and emergency counts.
  • Cross‑check and maintain movement logs.
  • Conduct searches for contraband (canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip, vehicle).
  • Inspect facility and cells for health, safety, and sanitation standards.
  • Inspect inmate mail and property.
  • Respond to emergency situations such as fights, medical emergencies, fires, and escapes.
  • Follow tool and key control procedures and maintain documentation.
  • Attend roll call.
  • Document incidents using established reporting practices.
  • Communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED certificate.
Conditions of Employment

  • Must have valid U.S. work authorization; no H‑1B sponsorship available.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted Colorado driver’s license.
  • Must not have felony convictions and must disclose any prior disciplinary separation.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation is required.
  • All job offers are contingent upon a successful health screening.
  • Must successfully complete all modules of the CDOC Basic Training, including written and practical exams.
  • Must be physically able to complete defensive tactics and be willing to use physical force as trained.
  • Must be willing and able to work all shifts (including doubles, weekends, holidays) and in inclement weather.
  • Must be able to travel and/or transport inmates in a state vehicle.
  • Must pass tuberculosis screening upon hire.

  • Knowledge of criminal justice systems, ADA, PREA, and CDOC policies.
  • Intermediate computer keyboarding and email communication skills.
  • Ability to conduct searches (canine, metal, pat, perimeter, strip, vehicle).
  • Ability to safely operate mechanical doors and security equipment.
  • Willingness to use firearms, restraints, and security devices safely.
  • Willingness to follow chain of command and safety protocols.
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergencies (fights, medical emergencies, fires, escapes).
  • Physical ability to climb stairs, walk on hard surfaces, and work outdoors.
  • Willingness to adhere to the CDOC Drug Deterrence Program.
  • Self‑control, emotional stability, and mental resilience under pressure.
  • Tolerance to stress, confinement, and high‑stakes interaction.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual language skills.
  • Experience mentoring others or volunteer work.
