Duties & Responsibilities
- Respond and conduct crash investigations
- Utilize a Police Radio and Computer Aided Dispatch System
- Issue municipal summons (electronic or handwritten)
- Testify in court
- Conduct follow‑up investigations
- Complete in‑person or phone generated reports of crime
- Interview victims and witnesses
- Collect, deposit, and manage property and evidence
- Use department software and applicable applications for assigned duties
- Provide support for traffic control and direction
- Perform other related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications & Working Conditions Education- High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
- 1–2 years of in‑person customer service involving problem solving and incident documentation
- Bilingual in any language including English
- Strong computer skills and regular use of applications
- Higher level education
- 1–2 years experience in law enforcement, loss prevention, internal investigations, or security
- Safe and proper operation of a motor vehicle
- Computer and software application utilization
- Communication and effective de‑escalation principles and techniques
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Self‑motivated; able to work in the field without direct supervision
- Windows‑based program proficiency
- Strong customer service skills
- Crises communications management and de‑escalation, public speaking
- Detail‑oriented information verification and error correction
- Team collaboration abilities
- Ability to take direction for specific tasks
- Effective communication and sound decision‑making based on thorough investigations
- Maintain effective relationships with employees, management, citizens, and officials
- Handle sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy
- Orally and in writing communication proficiency
- Creative problem solving, negotiation, and stress management
- Work non‑traditional hours and adjust to department needs
- Work overtime as required (court, special events, investigations)
- Valid driver’s license upon hire (history required)
- Obtain NCIC/CCIC clearance within six months
- Complete civilian City of Aurora vehicle operation certification
- 80 hours classroom/skills training followed by 80 hours field training and evaluation (completed within six months of hire)
- Classroom and skills training: 40 hours crash investigations
- 8 hours Self‑defense (including OC spray certification)
- 8 hours First aid and recognition of drug and alcohol impairment
- 4 hours De‑escalation
- 12 hours Department procedures, evidence collection, traffic direction, and driving
- 8 hours mandatory new employee city training; field training evaluation program (FTEP)
- 80 hours field training and evaluation
- May be required to work as essential personnel during declared emergencies or disasters
- Light work moving no more than 20 pounds
- Frequent lifting, carrying, walking, and standing during investigations or traffic direction
- May require pushing, pulling, bending, and stooping
- Clear vision and hearing for communication and document interpretation
- Hand/eye coordination for vehicle, radio, and computer use
- Reasonably good physical condition for self‑defense training and application
- Wear ballistic vest under uniform while in the field and driving
- Primarily outdoors varying weather conditions; occasional indoor climate‑controlled office work
- Weekend work may be scheduled for special events
- Regular court appearances required
