New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

CDOT has a vacancy for a Heavy Equipment Field Mechanic operating out of Thornton, CO.
About the Position- Base pay typically between $2,478 - 2,609.54 biweekly ($64,428 - $67,848 annually), plus $1,000/month housing stipend, total $75,480 - $80,172 annually.
- New employees to the State will be paid biweekly with 26 pay periods in a year.
- Work schedule:
4‑day week 0600‑1630 May – September; 5‑day week 0800‑1630 October – April.
- Medical and Dental benefits after 30‑day sign‑up, dependents included (Cigna or Kaiser).
- Choice of retirement plans offered by Colorado PERA.
- 96 hours vacation & 80 hours sick leave earned within first year plus 11 paid holidays.
- No out‑of‑pocket expenses for tools; CDOT provides all hand and power tools and specialty equipment.
- CDOT provides PPE, training on equipment, CPR, first aid.
- Full payment for CDL physical.
- Reimbursement 50% for CDL renewal after first year.
- Majority of work will be in the field.
- Diagnose and repair heavy truck and construction equipment malfunctions on all major systems.
- Overhaul and rebuild components and equipment.
- Use test equipment to diagnose defects or malfunctions.
- Work on various heavy truck and construction equipment (3.5‑ton single axle, 10‑ton tandem axle, tractor‑trailers, front end loaders, motor graders, asphalt paving machines, 15' mower tractors).
- Perform preventative maintenance and annual safety inspections.
- Design and fabricate parts and special tools.
- Order and procure parts and supplies.
- Use computers to track vehicle repairs.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
- Other job duties as assigned.
- Four years of experience in automotive and heavy equipment repair or education in automotive/diesel mechanics (transcript required).
- At least one year of experience diagnosing and repairing heavy diesel equipment such as 10‑ton double axle snowplows, tractor‑trailers, bulldozers, motor graders, paving machines, and/or 15' mower tractors.
- Demonstrated success with duties listed above.
- State service experience related to duties.
- Extensive experience troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing automotive and heavy‑duty diesel vehicles and equipment (up to 10 tons).
- Current valid Commercial Driver's License Class A or B with no restrictions on air brakes.
- Pass pre‑employment screening (social security trace, criminal records, educational records, driving records).
- Some on‑call and shift work may be required.
- May be required to pass a controlled substance test and DOT physical.
- Willing to respond to emergencies outside regular hours, work overtime including weekends and holidays.
- Physically able to perform essential job duties.
- Essential Services Designation – required to report without delay.
- New employees required to attend two weeks of maintenance training in Aurora; veteran employees attend one week annually.
