Job SummaryThis Correctional Support Trades Supervisor II (CSTS II) is the Boiler House Lieutenant for the Buena Vista Correctional Complex. Primary responsibilities include ensuring the safety and security of the general public, staff and inmates; ensuring safe, efficient and compliant operation of facility Boiler House systems and supervising assigned staff and inmate work crews. This position promotes the Colorado Department of Corrections Mission, Vision and Values with honesty, integrity and commitment.
Responsibilities- Maintain safety and security of facility and work sites through clear communication and training staff and inmates in the proper use of controlled items, keys, tools, equipment and chemicals.
- Supervise assigned staff who supervise and train inmate workers, promoting high performance by setting work standards and instructing in safe construction practices and proper use of PPE.
- Participate in hiring process, interview candidates, prepare performance plans and evaluations, assign tasks, monitor and inspect work progress, and coach staff for career growth.
- Participate in inmate placement and training, monitor project progress, inspect work, ensure timely completion of tasks, track inmate hours and pay, create schedules, resolve grievances, and reduce idleness.
- Provide supervisory duties in the absence of other supervisors.
- Ensure safe, efficient, compliant and cost‑effective execution of assigned tasks and projects, performing hands‑on instructional work alongside staff and inmates.
- Maintain facility boiler house, water treatment plant and assist with HVAC systems, completing corrective, preventive and predictive maintenance and routine inspections.
- Coordinate logistical support with other trades and shops, monitor progress and quality, complete required documentation such as work orders and incident reports.
- Maintain compliance with ACA and applicable regulations, maintain accurate documentation and record‑keeping, obtain vendor quotes, manage inventory and requisitions, and update drawings and records.
- Work subject to facility call back, additional hours or shifts, rotating weekends, inclement weather, and close proximity to industrial equipment.
- May be assigned to assist other trades supervisors and crews.
- Five (5) years of employment experience in boiler operations performing preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance.
- Position required to obtain an Active Colorado Stationary Engineer License within four (4) years of hire.
- Or applicant may meet the five (5) year requirement with a combination of work experience: three (3) years in boiler operations may be combined with Building/Equipment Maintenance and/or Correctional experience.
- Building/Equipment Maintenance includes planning, estimating, and performing hands‑on trades such as carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, welding, machinery/equipment repair and/or electrical on residential, commercial, or agricultural structures.
- Correctional Experience must be security related duties where primary responsibilities include monitoring and controlling offender movement, discovering and preventing contraband, responding to emergencies, ensuring proper control of keys/tools/chemicals, advising inmates, and preparing them for community re‑entry.
