Job Title: HVACR Technician, Pipe Mechanical Trades II
Position: # 216303 – Requisition: #40042 Job Summary

The PMT-II HVACR Technician will operate, monitor, service and/or repair Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVACR) systems, and associated hardware for all CU Anschutz Campus buildings. The technician will respond to emergency calls pertaining to HVACR problems and emergencies throughout the campus. This position helps to ensure the safest and most efficient operation of equipment for the HVACR systems at CU Anschutz.

Key Responsibilities
  • Complete work requests for preventive maintenance and repair of refrigeration systems, including inspection, replacement, adjustment, program, and calibration of electronic and refrigeration controls and components for systems ranging from 4°C to 37°C environmental rooms, process chillers, and walk‑in freezers. Operate university vehicles to transport equipment and tools to work sites and record maintenance data.
  • Complete work requests for preventive maintenance, repairs, and installations of building and occupant‑owned heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, components, and controls, including package systems, split systems, chillers, CRAC units, AHUs, FCUs, RTUs, exhaust fans, humidifiers, furnaces, and snow‑melters. Operate university vehicles to transport equipment and tools and record work performed in a work‑order data system.
  • Use servicing and recovery equipment to recover CFC, HCFC, and HFC type refrigerants following EPA guidelines. Store and reuse all types of refrigerants. Participate in and monitor the refrigerant recovery program, enter information into a database, and maintain hard‑copy records of all refrigerant handling activities. Accurately weigh and record tank tare weights and gross weights and perform necessary calculations.
  • Provide training and assistance to other employees.
  • Participate and assist in emergencies based on magnitude and nature. Support various special events in preparation and during the event.
  • Work Location

    Onsite – this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, Colorado.

    Qualifications
  • Three years of experience in the HVACR industry.
  • EPA Universal Certification for refrigerant work; if not currently possessed, must obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Substitution:
    Appropriate education or successful completion of a formalised apprenticeship related to HVACR can substitute for the required experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
  • Note:

    This position has been designated as essential personnel and will be required to respond to emergencies as needed. Position may also require staying late, coming in early, or covering shifts as needed.
  • Preferred Qualifications
    • At least four years of experience in the HVACR industry.
    • Commercial HVACR experience.
    • Experience with medium and/or low temperature refrigeration applications.
    • Experience working with chillers.
    • Experience with large motor and bearing repairs – 10HP and above.

    • Ability to manage multiple tasks.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish rapport with persons of diverse backgrounds.

    • Mechanical ability: ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and fix problems.
    • Physical ability that meets the physical requirements assessment for the position.
    Anticipated Pay Range
  • $5,397 - $5,667 per month ($64,764 - $68,004 per year). Overtime compensation is available. Position may be eligible for a one‑time non‑base sign‑on bonus up to $2,000.
