Job Title: HVACR Technician, Pipe Mechanical Trades II

Position: #216303 - Requisition #40042

Job Summary: The PMT-II HVACR Technician will operate, monitor, service and/or repair heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR) systems and associated hardware for all CU Anschutz Campus buildings. The technician will respond to emergency calls pertaining to HVACR problems and emergencies throughout the campus. This position helps to ensure the safest and most efficient operation of equipment for the HVACR systems at CU Anschutz.

Key Responsibilities
  • Complete work requests for preventive maintenance and repairs to refrigeration systems; inspect, replace, adjust, program, and calibrate electronic and refrigeration controls and components; install, repair, and replace systems and components. Systems include 4C to 37C environmental rooms, process chillers, and walk‑in freezers. Operate university vehicles to transport equipment and tools to work sites. Record maintenance data in a computer.
  • Complete work requests for preventive maintenance, repairs, and installations to building and occupant‑owned heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) systems, components, and controls. Operate university vehicles to transport equipment and tools. Record work performed in a work order data system. Types of systems include package, split systems, chillers, CRAC units, AHUs, FCUs, RTUs, exhaust fans, humidifiers, furnaces, and snow‑melters.
  • Use servicing and recovery equipment to recover CFC, HCFC, and HFC refrigerants following EPA guidelines. Store and reuse refrigerants. Participate in and monitor the refrigerant recovery program. Enter information into a database and maintain hard‑copy records of all refrigerant handling activities, accurately weighing and recording tank tare and gross weights and calculating amounts used.
  • Provide training and assistance to other employees.
  • Participate and assist in emergencies based on magnitude and nature. Support special events in preparation and during the event.
Work Location

Onsite – the role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, Colorado.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Three years of experience in the HVACR industries.
  • EPA Universal Certification to work with refrigerants on all types of equipment. If not currently possessing a Universal (Types 1, 2, or
    3) certification, the applicant must agree to obtain it within 6 months of hire.
  • Substitution:
    Appropriate education or successful completion of a formalized apprenticeship related to HVACR can substitute for the required experience on a year‑for‑year basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least four years of experience in the HVACR industries.
  • Commercial HVACR experience.
  • Experience with medium and/or low temperature refrigeration applications.
  • Experience working with chillers.
  • Experience with large motor and bearing repairs – 10HP and above.

  • Ability to work and communicate with customers, peers, and trade helpers.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish rapport with persons of diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent oral communication skills with the ability to handle stressful situations calmly and professionally.
  • Mechanical ability: able to diagnose, troubleshoot, and fix problems.
  • Physical ability that meets the physical requirements assessment for the position.
