The University of Colorado School of Medicine (CU SOM) Department of Family Medicine (DFM) seeks a Vice Chair for Research (VCR) to lead an active and growing research program in the DFM. The position will provide administrative leadership for the research mission area of the DFM, participate as a member of the DFM executive leadership team, and may also engage in funded research, clinical work, or teaching depending on the candidate’s background and interests.

The role involves partnership with programs, departments, centers, and disciplines across the CU SOM and other schools, community and academic partners.

Hybrid – eligible for a hybrid schedule of 3 days per week on campus and as needed for in-person meetings.

• Provide leadership for the DFM research mission area, including decision‑making with the chair and other vice chairs regarding setting strategic goals and priorities, budgeting, execution of plans, metrics and benchmarks, and regular reporting.
• Participate as an active member of the DFM’s ELT, attending weekly meetings, reviewing policies and procedures, and maintaining communication with the chair and vice chairs.
• Administratively review and approve research mission area requests and projects.
• Oversee and manage the research mission area budget.
• Communicate research activities, updates, and dissemination in coordination with the Director of Communication.
• Determine policies and procedures for the research mission area.
• Support the well‑being and needs of research‑area faculty and staff, and other DFM employees.

• Progress own research agenda and participate in DFM projects, serving as a resource and mentor to junior faculty and trainees in health services research.
• Secure federal and other large grants and contracts (as PI and MPI) in health services and/or clinical trials research, and participate as a Co‑I in active research.
• Secure other grants and contracts from diverse funders.
• Prepare manuscripts, edit, and employ innovative approaches to disseminate results.
• Collaborate with teams across CU departments, local organizations, and academic institutions to conduct research and disseminate findings.
• Build and maintain relationships with clinicians in the DFM, across campus, and in community and clinical settings.
• Establish and maintain communication and promote collaboration within CU and other organizations.
• Provide professional development and research mentorship to junior faculty, research staff, residents, and fellows in the DFM.
• Provide oversight of project staff and identify professional development opportunities.
• May provide clinical services in primary care or specialty clinics, as determined by the department and candidate.
• May provide teaching in SOM or other clinical areas, as determined by the department and candidate.

• Education:
  
  Terminal degree in Medicine or Osteopathy (MD or DO) or PhD or equivalent in behavioral or social sciences, public health, nursing, pharmacy, or other relevant areas.
• Experience:
  
  Graduated from an accredited graduate program and a combination of research post‑doc and at least 5 years of experience working in primary care research, implementation science, clinical trials, community‑based research related to primary care, and health services research.
• Research funding:
  Track record of and demonstrated potential for extramural funded research in primary care and/or practice‑based research settings aligned with the department’s focus.
• Special skills:
  Ability to meet the School of Medicine’s criteria for full or associate professor. If physician, the ability to obtain a Colorado Medical License, possess a current DEA Certificate, and be credentialed with the UCH system and UPI Managed Care.

• Experience with leading research teams in a DFM.
