Position PurposeThe substitute teacher is considered a ministerial employee by their role working in a Catholic School and agrees to work diligently to support and strengthen the Catholic Church and its value system. The teacher works to support all official religious teachings of the Catholic Church in personal and professional life, and conveys the Catholic Church's message and carries out its mission.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Serve as a positive role model and support the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church at all times.
- Create a faith‑focused learning environment within the classroom and school.
- Facilitate student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills.
- Implement the absent teacher’s written plans with fidelity and document student progress, activities, and outcomes.
- Leave detailed notes for the absent teacher.
- Create a flexible, safe, and optimal learning environment.
- Serve as a model of the Catholic faith in words, actions, speech, dress, and demeanor.
- Promote a classroom environment that is safe for individualized and small‑group instruction.
- Differentiating instruction based on student learning styles and needs, as per the teacher’s directives.
- Conduct individual and small‑group instruction as needed.
- Ensure students conduct conforms with the school’s standards and diocesan policies.
- Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed for a functional learning atmosphere.
- Utilize available technology to enhance instruction.
- Supervise students in activities outside the classroom during the school day.
- Seek advice and counsel of the principal and fellow educators as appropriate when dealing with classroom issues.
- Use standard office equipment, Microsoft Office, and other technology to enhance lessons.
- Perform additional duties assigned by school administration.
- Hold a current Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL), a current Illinois Substitute License, or a valid out‑of‑state certificate with Illinois reciprocity.
- Hold a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education or related discipline applicable to the teaching assignment.
- Teaching in a Catholic setting is preferred; required to teach religion or theology courses.
- Previous teaching experience in elementary or secondary education preferred.
- Experience differentiating instruction for all students preferred.
- Excellent communication and classroom management skills essential.
- Knowledge of Catholic elementary school curriculum and concepts required.
This is a part‑time, unpaid position. The substitute teacher works as needed or on a schedule developed by the principal.
Salary RangeDetermined at the local level – daily rate.

The employee may be required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, see, feel with hands, reach with arms, walk up or down multiple flights of stairs, and lift up to 20–30 pounds.
