As a High School Equivalency instructor, you will play a critical role in helping students build confidence, develop academic skills, and create pathways to college, career advancement, and economic mobility.

This position requires an educator who is compassionate, student-centered, and committed to meeting learners where they are. The ideal candidate understands that adult learners bring valuable life experiences to the classroom and uses creativity, flexibility, and multiple instructional strategies to engage students with varying academic levels, learning styles, and personal goals.

As an adjunct instructor, you will teach Adult Basic Education (ABE) and Adult Secondary Education (ASE) courses in Language Arts and/or Mathematics designed to prepare students to successfully complete the GED examinations and earn their State of Illinois High School Diploma. High School Equivalency (GED) classes typically meet face-to-face two days per week from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Fall classes begin August 17, 2026.

Essential Responsibilities
Deliver engaging, student-centered instruction that supports adult learners in achieving their educational and career goals.

Create a welcoming classroom environment that fosters confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging.

Prepare lesson plans and syllabi aligned with the approved curriculum and syllabus template.

Utilize a variety of instructional strategies, technologies, and learning activities to address diverse learning needs and academic skill levels.

Assess student progress and provide timely, constructive feedback to support academic growth.

Maintain accurate and timely records related to enrollment, attendance, grades, and student performance.

Collaborate with Transition Advisors and other support staff to promote student persistence, retention, and successful transition to college and career pathways.

Complete New Teacher Orientation and participate in ongoing training opportunities.

Fulfill the State of Illinois requirement of 12 hours of Adult Education professional development annually.

Contribute to a culture of respect, encouragement, and high expectations that empowers students to achieve life-changing educational milestones.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Education, English, Mathematics, Adult Education or related field.

Demonstrated ability to teach reading, writing, language arts, and/or mathematics to diverse learners.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Proficiency with instructional technology and basic computer applications.

Ability to create a welcoming, inclusive, and culturally responsive learning environment.

Commitment to supporting adult learners with compassion, patience, and respect.

Ability to adapt instruction to meet the varied academic, cultural, and personal needs of adult students.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree in Adult Education or related field

Prior experience teaching Adult Basic Education (ABE), Adult Secondary Education (ASE), GED preparation, developmental education, ESL, high school, or community college courses.

Experience working with underserved, underprepared, or nontraditional student populations.

Experience integrating technology into instruction and using data to inform teaching.

Familiarity with the Illinois High School Diploma (GED) examinations and College and Career Readiness Standards.

Bilingual proficiency is a plus.

ICCB Adult Education Standards Certification.

Understanding of Canvas, IXL, i-Pathways, and/or Essential Education learning platforms.
