Solid Works Design Engineer

Design Engineer Kelly® Engineering is seeking a Design Engineer for a direct hire position with an Aurora, IL based client. This is an ideal role for an individual with 3+ years design engineering experience. Overview Our client's a privately held manufacturer of sheet metal products. Their core manufacturing processes include metal fabrication, welding, and assembly. Due to growth, they're adding a Design Engineer. As a Design Engineer, you'll report to the Engineering Manager and will be involved in all aspects of product development including design from customer specification, prototyping, release to manufacturing and installation while supporting CAD administration, engineering changes, and manufacturing processes.

About 80% of your time will be spent on product development, 10% on Solid Works file management/CAD administration, 10% supporting manufacturing operations.

Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, and modify 3D models and 2D drawings using Solid Works in accordance with customer requirements, engineering standards, and manufacturing constraints.
  • New reiterations of existing designs for in-house manufacturing
  • Develop custom design solutions for retail fixtures, POP displays, and related fabricated products for outsourced manufacturing
  • Design assemblies and subcomponents with consideration for functionality, durability, cost, safety, and manufacturability.
  • Prepare complete and accurate engineering documentation including drawings, specifications, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and installation documentation.
  • Apply engineering judgment and problem-solving skills to evaluate design options and support sound technical decisions.
  • Support prototype builds, testing, validation activities, and production launch efforts.
Engineering Documentation & CAD Administration
  • Support and enforce CAD standards, create or update templates, file structures, and engineering best practices within Solid Works and related systems.
  • Serve as a technical resource for CAD-related troubleshooting and user support.
  • Maintain and audit CAD models, drawings, and common part libraries to ensure compliance with company standards.
  • Assist with onboarding and training of engineering team members on CAD tools, standards, and processes.
  • Support management and organization of engineering documentation, revisions, and release processes.
  • Create, maintain, and manage part numbers within Solid Works & Net Suite or ERP systems to ensure accurate product identification and traceability.
  • Coordinate updates to part numbers, BOMs, routings, and related ERP data following Engineering Change Requests (ECRs).
  • Ensure manufacturing documentation and ERP data support efficient work order execution and material planning.
  • Assist in maintaining data accuracy within MRP/ERP systems to minimize production delays, shortages, or documentation errors.
Manufacturing & Production Support
  • Work closely with Manufacturing, Production, and Operations teams to resolve fabrication, assembly, and quality-related issues.
  • Respond to shop floor questions by providing technical clarifications, dimensions, drawing updates, breaking down assembly drawings to piece parts as needed.
  • Support development and improvement of manufacturing processes including design of tooling, jigs, and fixtures.
  • Collaborate with Purchasing and Supply Chain to provide technical support for sourcing, quoting, and supplier communication.
  • Coordinate with external suppliers, fabricators, and contract manufacturers as required.
  • Initiate and process Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) and related documentation to capture product or process improvements.
  • Investigate and resolve design-related nonconformances and production issues.
  • Participate in product approval and release processes to ensure designs meet quality, performance, and customer expectations.
  • Support quality validation activities including inspections, testing, and corrective actions.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field.
  • 3–5+ years of experience in product design, manufacturing engineering, or related engineering roles within a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience designing for manufacturing, including sheet metal (required), tubing, wire, plastics, or aluminum extrusions.
  • Strong proficiency with Solid Works required; experience with Solid Works PDM, 3D Experience, or Solid Works Composer preferred.
  • Experience in creating and managing Bills of Materials (BOMs), part numbers, and ERP/MRP data.
  • Working knowledge of ERP/MRP systems;
    Net Suite experience preferred.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes, production support, and engineering change management.
  • Familiarity with GD&T, weld symbols, bend allowances and engineering drawing standards.
  • Strong problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
