LOCATION: 80 N. Broadway, Aurora, IL60505

POSITION DETAILS: Exempt, Full-time, Regular

HOURS: Monday-Friday, 8:30AM-4PM

Summary

Under the direction of the Township Supervisor, the Comptroller is responsible for maintaining and directing all financial, accounting, and fiscal management services to meet legal requirements and support Aurora Township operations. This role focuses on high-level financial stewardship, budgetary integrity, and regulatory compliance.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in accounting, business administration, or related discipline required;
Master’s degree preferred.

Experience:

7-10 years of progressive experience in accounting or government finance required; equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licensure: A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license is required.

Responsibilities
  • Strategic Fiscal Leadership: plans and directs all financial and operational accounting activities for the Township
  • Financial Oversight: oversees full‑cycle accounting functions, including the high‑level management of general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, cash management, and fixed asset reporting
  • Financial Reporting: prepares comprehensive financial statements on a monthly and year‑end basis in accordance with GAAP and GASB standards; ensures accurate recording and reporting of all Township funds and expenditures; manages year‑end closing activities and coordinates annual external audit and financial reports
  • Budgeting and Financial Planning: assists in development and administration of the annual Township budget; monitors budget performance and prepares budget‑to‑actual analyses; assists with tax levy calculations and financial projections
  • Executive Reporting: provides regular financial support to the Township Supervisor, Board of Trustees, department managers, auditors, and external agencies; attends Board meetings as required
  • Board Audits: prepares and reviews departmental expense reports for audit and approval by the Township Board of Trustees
  • Compliance and Internal Controls: establishes and administers all tax filings and governmental reporting procedures accurately and on a timely basis to remain in compliance with laws and regulations; develops, implements, and maintains strong internal control systems
  • Payroll & Pension Management: oversees the employee payroll system and manages the preparation, maintenance, and submission of state and federal payroll tax reporting and monthly Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF) payroll data and reports
  • Banking Relations: manages and maintains professional, strategic relationships with banks and financial institutions
  • Foundation Stewardship: oversees the financial administration of the Aurora Township Senior and Youth Foundation, a 501c3 organization
  • Other Duties: performs other duties as assigned appropriate to the title and function of the position
