Job Summary
Under the supervision of a licensed physician, the Medical Assistant (MA) works as part of a multidisciplinary care team to support both clinical and administrative functions and contribute to the continuity of care to the patient. The MA works collaboratively with physicians, nurses and administrative staff in the Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) model of care and in the Specialty Clinics.
Responsibilities- Obtains medical history, vital signs, including blood pressure, height, weight, BMI, and records the data accurately and legibly.
- Reviews patient or employee medical records for completeness and assists patients in completing relevant forms.
- Prepares patient rooms for medical visits, maintains cleanliness, and disposes of potentially infectious materials appropriately.
- Assists with clerical duties such as answering phones, sorting medical charts, retrieving lab reports, scheduling appointments, billing, and maintaining or obtaining current demographic and insurance information.
- Performs laboratory procedures, including finger stick glucose, venipuncture, EKGs, urine dipsticks, urine pregnancy test, throat cultures, point‑of‑care testing, and i‐stats. Logs and documents results in medical records.
- Assists physician with physical exams, minor surgical procedures and treatments, such as dressings and ear irrigations, and administers oral medications and injections following physician orders.
- Performs phlebotomy service and prepares specimens as directed; prepares, administers, and documents immunizations.
- Administers first aid and related procedures including removing and changing dressings, applying bandages, and removing sutures.
- May be required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
- Provides an accurate and complete medication list for patients.
- Communicates patient needs to provider, including refill requests, tests, and patient concerns.
- Supports the provider staff with completing referrals for diagnostic testing and specialist visits following the provider’s order.
- Participates in and supports Joint Commission surveys and patient care rounds.
- Receives, organizes, and stocks clinical supplies; maintains inventory of medical supplies and samples delivered by pharmaceutical representatives.
- Performs equipment sterilization at site or prepares equipment for transfer to another facility; reports malfunctions to staff physician or clinical coordinator.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skill in interacting with patients of all ages and cultural backgrounds.
- Performs other related duties as required.
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or five (5) years of recent full‑time professional Medical Assistant experience; official transcripts required at interview.
- Certificate as a Medical Assistant from one of the following organizations: AAMA, AMT, NHA, ARMA, NCCT, NRCMA, or completion of a Cook County Medical Assistant training program.
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
- Bilingual proficiency in Spanish (passing score of 3 – High Intermediate on Spanish testing).
- One (1) year of experience as a Medical Assistant or in a related clinical capacity within a healthcare environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel).
- Working knowledge of medical terminology.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with staff and a diverse patient population.
- Awareness of HIPAA and patient confidentiality requirements.
- Sensitivity and respect in caring for patients of all ages and cultural backgrounds.
- Analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Attention to detail, accuracy, and precision.
- Flexibility and adaptability in performing work duties.
- Emergency response skills.
- Observance of environmental and OSHA safety practices.
- Ability to transition between clinical and administrative duties.
- Ability to meet deadlines.
- Ability to update educational requirements per licensing association or required by Cook County Health & Hospitals System.
