Position Summary:
Functions as the member of the surgical team who assists the surgeon, anesthesiologist/anesthetist and RN in delivering direct patient care during the entire preoperative experience. Acts as the primary scrub person during the operative procedure. Primary Customers:
Patients and their families, physicians and their office staff and all other hospital team members.

Clinical Manager and Center RNs.
- Participates in the collection of data to support unit based quality initiatives, research and evidence based activities.
- Utilizes system wide resources to support decision making and action.
- Communicates current evidence-based information with peers and nursing staff.
- Establishes a caring, therapeutic relationship with patients and families through effective communication, acknowledgement of patient/family perceptions of health and illness and mutual goal setting for optimal outcomes.
- Collaborates consistently and effectively with other disciplines and services to meet the needs of patients/families.
- Performs scrub responsibilities according to standard of care, physicians preference and policy and procedure.
- Anticipates the needs of the surgeon and ensures proper instrument during the operative procedure; applies the principles of sterile technique.
- Correctly counts during operative procedures according to policy and procedures.
- Accurately cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization according to hospital policy.
- Accurately operates decontamination and sterilization equipment according to OR policy and procedures.
- Accurately documents biological and sterilization information according to OR policy and procedures.
- Assists in providing meaningful orientation and ongoing experience to new staff, students and other team members.
- Demonstrates beginning leadership skills related to patient care.
- Demonstrates accountability for own professional practice, including progress toward achievement of annual goals.
PATIENT POPULATION THIS POSITION SERVICES:
Infant, child, young adult, adult and geriatric patients.
Education:
Graduate of a program of surgical technology of at least one year duration.
Certifications:
Certification by the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST), National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), or similar certifying body required.
BLS required

Skills:
- Able to function in emergency situations
- Ability to take call (30-minute response time) required
