Position: ATTENDANT PATIENT CARE - MEDICAL UNIT 8 WEST

PLEASE BE ADVISED that this position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement between Cook County and the TEAMSTERS LOCAL 743 (TEAMSTERS – 73). Pursuant to the collective bargaining agreement, Cook County will exhaust internal eligible applicants prior to considering external applicants. Cook County is assembling a list of qualified candidates for this position that will be considered should the position not be filled with internal eligible applicants.

LOCATION:

PROVIDENT HOSPITAL DEPARTMENT: MEDICAL UNIT 8 WEST SHIFT: 11:00 PM - 7:30 PM POSTING SALARY: $21.304 - $22.618 HOURLY

Salary is commensurate with years of experience indicated at time of application submittal. Experience not disclosed or documented at the time of application will not be considered for initial step placement.

Job Summary Teamsters 743

Under direct supervision of a nurse, preforms a variety of direct and indirect patient care activities for a select group of patients. Assists in maintaining a clean, safe environment; as well as adequate inventory of equipment and supplies that are essential to provide patient care.

Typical Duties
  • Provides general nursing cares to meet the physical needs of the patients (bath, changing line, elimination, comfort measure, etc.).
  • Prepares the hospital room and unit to receive new patient (admission and transfers) assist with pre-operative and post-operative care of the patient.
  • Assists with positioning the patient; lifting and turning; transferring in and out of bed and transporting; ambulate patients as needed.
  • Assists with applying special devices and equipment as necessary to provide comfort and safety to patients.
  • Participates in nursing reports - receives patient care status report at the beginning of the shift and provides status reports and pertinent changes to nursing personnel at the end of the shift and as needed.
  • Takes and records vital signs, height and weight of patients, and record accurately as directed.
  • As directed, measures and records intake and output accurately.
  • Distributes water and other nourishment items; assist patients vides post-mortem care and assists with transport of body.
  • Answers patient call lights and provides assistance as needed.
  • Collects specimens, labels and transport appropriately.
  • Reports all pertinent information to nursing personnel, including changes in behavior. Assist in maintaining a clean and safe environment for patient and family.
  • Follows policy and procedures and aseptic technique in providing care for patients. Treat patients/family courteously and respects Patients' Bill of Rights and Rights of Privacy.
  • Understands precautions in regard to age, i.e. children, elderly and has the ability to recognize problems and bring them to the immediate attention of nursing staff.
  • Check supplies and essential patient care equipment to ensure adequate availability in the area.
  • Adapts to changes in workload to meet emergencies or to meet priorities in providing patient care.
  • Run errands for nursing personnel for all types of patient care related activities (obtain supplies, equipment, medicines, etc.).
  • Upholds hospital/unit P&P and code of conduct at all times.
  • Participate as preceptor in orienting new patient care attendants in the assigned area of duty.
  • As directed, records all pertinent information, regarding the patient, in an accurate and timely manner in Cerner I-View.
  • Attends continuing education classes.
  • Complies with dress code.
  • Wears identification badge at all times.
  • Attends all mandatory in-service classes.
  • Obtains yearly CPR certification.
  • Reports to the Nurse Coordinator II.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED is required (Must provide proof at time of interview)
