Registered Nurse – First Assistant
OverviewResponsible for assisting in patient care and preparation of surgical patients by performing scrub and circulating duties. Provides assistance in emergency procedures as well as elective and scheduled cases. Assists in preparation, transportation, and supervision of patients. Maintains education in surgical operating room and related aspects.
Responsibilities- Assess patients’ conditions and care delivery through direct observation, rounding, and data input from other team members.
- Collect pertinent data and information relative to the patient’s health or situation.
- Recognize normal and abnormal findings when gathering data.
- Assume accountability for verification of operative procedure, identification of specimens, completion of instrument counts and assurance of sterile integrity.
- Coordinate bed and patient care assignments during shift and in preparation for next shift to ensure consistency.
- Plan and evaluate care in collaboration with appropriate disciplines for assigned patients.
- Analyze assessment data to determine diagnosis, problems, and issues.
- Document and report care delivered to physicians and other team members as needed.
- Enhance professional growth through classes related to communication, teaching, stress management, conflict resolution, team building annually.
- Evaluate outcomes of care delivered and adjust approach accordingly.
- Implement care and supervise care delivered by other team members in alignment with plan of care and approved safety and infection control standards.
- Pursue required knowledge and skills through orientation, unit–based in‑service programs, reading current literature, and seeking new clinical learning opportunities.
- Make perioperative patient assessments and develop patient plans.
- Identify expected outcomes for an individualized plan.
- Perform circulating and scrub duties as assigned.
- Develop strategies to attain expected measurable outcomes.
- Predict potential risk to patients and others and initiate actions to minimize or prevent risk.
- Provide leadership and supervision to health care team during assigned shift.
- Provide patient and family teaching.
- Provide performance feedback to team members and input to manager regarding appraisals.
- Provide rationale for patient care decisions based on standards of care (AORN).
- Establish effective working relationships with peers, physicians, and other members of the health care team.
- Serve as a positive role model for other health care team members.
- Takes call after hours as assigned.
- Registered or licensed nursing degree (ADN, RN etc.) with current RN license in Illinois.
- Certified as First Assistant (CRNFA) or eligibility to obtain certification within 90 days of hire.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification within 90 days of hire.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification within 90 days of hire.
- Experience or ability to assist in operating room settings.
Full‑time, 36 hours per week. Pay based on experience, starting at $43.18 per hour, up to $66.93 per hour. Standard benefits package includes health, dental, vision, tuition reimbursement, and other employee benefits.
