Job Summary

The Field Service Technician is responsible for the commissioning, inspection, troubleshooting, and operator training of water and wastewater treatment equipment at domestic and international project sites. This role involves extensive travel, problem-solving in the field, and close communication with contractors, plant operators, and internal teams. The technician ensures that equipment is installed and operating according to specifications and industry best practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Travel to customer sites weekly, both domestically and occasionally internationally, to perform equipment installation inspections, start-ups, and system commissioning.
  • Verify that equipment has been installed correctly per engineering drawings and safety standards.
  • Communicate effectively with contractors and customers to identify and resolve issues on-site prior to equipment start-up.
  • Provide hands-on training to operators and maintenance personnel on equipment operation and preventative maintenance.
  • Independently troubleshoot and resolve mechanical and electrical field issues with minimal supervision.
  • Generate detailed job reports and document all findings, recommendations, and completed work.
  • Coordinate with internal engineering and production teams to ensure proper support and documentation.
  • Represent the company in a professional manner while on-site, maintaining strong customer relationships.

Skills and Specifications

Technical Skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook); familiar with job reporting tools and document management software.
  • Capable of reading and interpreting engineering drawings, wiring diagrams, and P&IDs.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude, including the ability to troubleshoot pumps, motors, gearboxes, actuators, and basic controls.
  • Familiarity with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and control panels is a plus.

Soft Skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with strong technical report writing abilities.
  • Proven ability to work independently in the field, manage priorities, and resolve complex problems under pressure.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with contractors, plant operators, and internal teams.
  • Highly organized; able to manage multiple projects and travel schedules.

Work Environment and Travel

  • Must be willing to travel regularly (weekly) across the U.S. and occasionally internationally.
  • Comfortable working in industrial and outdoor environments in varying weather conditions.

Education and Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Associate’s degree or technical certification in Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering preferred.
  • Minimum 2–3 years of relevant field service experience in wastewater, mechanical systems, or industrial equipment required.
  • Familiarity with water and wastewater treatment processes highly preferred.
  • Manufacturer training or certifications from equipment vendors (e.g., Power Flame, AUMA) are a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to obtain a passport.

Equipment Operated

  • Basic hand tools and power tools (drills, grinders, torque wrenches)
  • Multimeter and other diagnostic tools for electrical troubleshooting
  • Company vehicle and travel equipment (laptops, tablets, PPE)

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally, work on ladders/scaffolding, and perform physically demanding tasks in industrial settings.
  • Frequent standing, walking, stooping, and climbing during inspections and equipment work.
