Public Works/Sewer Collection (6 months of satisfactory probationary employment; the employee may be moved to the Plumber’s Union first six-month apprentice wage, currently $23.35/hour)

Nature of Work
:
This full‑time position in Sewer Collection is primarily manual. Responsibilities include maintenance and repair of the water distribution system and sewage collection system, filling in for Meter Services staff, reading water meters, and performing duties assigned to the board runner. The worker reports to and is evaluated by the Water and Sewer Supervisor.

• Manually repair water main, sewer main, water service, and sewer service.
• Inspect and select appropriate tools, materials, and equipment.
• Call for utility locations verbally.
• Read drawings or sketches to determine dig locations.
• Set up safety signs, barricades, and cones.
• Locate existing utilities using audible and visual pipe/metal locators; mark locations with paint.
• Use ladders and shovels to excavate and repair lines; operate hand and power tools.
• Lift and carry fittings and pipe weighing up to 100 lb for repairs.
• Operate trash pump/generator, flood lights, and mound–machine for line installation.
• Lift, mix, and pour concrete, and tap gravel or blacktop with end loader.
• Use and record two‑way radio or telephone for supervisor communication.
• Install new water service, water main, hydrant, valve, sewer service, main or manhole; operate a 150‑lb mole machine and 100‑lb tapping machine.
• Record inventory, meter readings, and parts used on work orders and inventory forms.
• Operate sewer jet, drive vehicle to site, and clean blockages; record results and provide customer statements.
• Read meters in various positions, record numbers, and secure meters.
• Operate dump truck, end loader, backhoe, and other heavy equipment; perform preventative maintenance on valves, hydrants, and manholes.
• Flush fire hydrants and record maintenance reports.
• Follow safety procedures, use PPE, and work in diverse conditions.
• Cooperate with public and co‑workers and work independently or as a team.
• Be available for overtime and emergency work as needed.

Perform additional duties related to the water and sewer system and the mission of the Utilities Department.

Primarily outdoors; exposes employee to fumes, odors, dust, smoke, gases, excessive noise, and extreme temperature. Motor vehicles are operated during the workday. Protective equipment used includes ear plugs, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, and steel‑toe shoes.

Sustained walking, standing, bending, stooping, crouching, crawling, kneeling, confined‑space work, climbing, frequent lifting and carrying of loads 15–49 lb, occasional lifting of 50 lb or more, use of hand and power tools. Requires perception of colors, sounds, depth, and texture.

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid CDL Class B Illinois driver’s license with air‑brake and tank endorsements within 60 days of employment.
• Pass pre‑employment and ongoing random drug screening, background check, and job duty physical evaluation.
• Obtain and maintain an Illinois EPA Class “D” water operator’s license within 4 years of employment.

Monday through Friday, typically 7:30 AM–4:00 PM; shift hours may vary seasonally. Occasional board runner duties (8:00 AM–5:00 PM). Overtime and emergency work required.

Residency within City’s 20‑mile boundary required within 6 months of employment.

$21.59 /hour after 6‑month probation; may rise to $23.35 /hour at the first six‑month apprentice wage. 4‑year apprenticeship with a graduated salary scale, annual raises to the Journeyman rate, currently $31.13 /hour.
