Position Overview:

The Field Technician I is an entry-level position responsible for supporting the inspection, testing, and maintenance of electrical equipment within transmission and distribution substations. Working under the direction of experienced technicians and engineers, the role focuses on performing hands-on tasks such as assisting with equipment testing, routine maintenance, and basic troubleshooting while adhering to strict safety standards. This position provides foundational experience in substation operations, emphasizing skill development, safe work practices, and effective collaboration to ensure the reliable operation of electrical power systems.

Responsibilities
  • Adhere to all company safety policies and procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) while working in substation environments.
  • Participate in safety training programs, meetings, and daily job briefings to maintain awareness of hazards and safe work practices.
  • Promote a culture of safety by following procedures, reporting hazards, and supporting incident reviews and lessons learned.
  • Assist with entry-level testing of high, medium, and low voltage electrical equipment under the direction of senior technicians or engineers.
  • Support inspection, testing, and maintenance of electrical equipment including circuit breakers (SF6, vacuum, and low voltage), transformers (pad-mounted and GSU), instrument transformers, grounding systems, battery systems, and switches.
  • Follow established procedures and test plans to help ensure equipment is operating safely and correctly.
  • Assist in troubleshooting equipment issues by using basic schematics, wiring diagrams, and guidance from experienced personnel.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks such as cleaning, basic repairs, and assisting with component replacement.
  • Assist with functional checks and testing to help verify equipment readiness for service.
  • Accurately complete and maintain basic documentation of work performed, including inspection and maintenance reports.
  • Work closely with senior technicians and engineers to support field activities and learn proper techniques and procedures.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean and organized condition.
Qualifications

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Able to pass a pre-employment drug screen due to this being a safety sensitive position.
  • Complete a satisfactory criminal background check.
  • Able to work overtime and travel out of town for periods of time.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and currently have and be able to maintain a good driving record.

Preferred Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with the following:
    • Voltage Verification
    • Contact Resistance
    • Insulation Resistance
    • Test Equipment Set Up
    • Read and Understand One-Line Drawings
    • Understand equipment identification and hazards associated with them

Education and Experience:

  • 0–1 year Industry Experience or 2 Year Technical Degree

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to climb ladders, stand for extended periods, able to lift 70 lbs.
