Veterans Service Officer – Veterans Assistance Commission of Cook County (Requisition : )
Performs duties related to interviewing, advising, and assisting veterans and their dependents to understand and obtain eligible benefits and entitlements under Federal and State legislation. Advocates for and assists veterans and dependents in identifying additional needs and coordinates with appropriate agencies for assistance. Serves as a liaison between veterans and dependents, and between Federal and State agencies and other resources. Determines eligibility and ensures that claims are processed professionally and within the legal framework governing veterans’ benefits.
Minimum Qualifications- High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) Certificate
- Six (6) years of experience in human services, counseling, or social work
- Or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience (required)
- Knowledge of the administrative and operating policies, procedures, and practices of the bureau/department.
- Experience creating reports using software packages and reporting tools.
- Understanding of applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations for relevant programs.
- Strong grasp of legal principles and practices, and interpretation of applicable laws, policies, and procedures.
- Customer‑service skills and strategies to understand user needs, manage expectations, and deliver solutions.
- Ability to establish or implement departmental policies, goals, objectives, or procedures in conjunction with board members, organization officials, or staff members.
Sedentary work with occasional or frequent lifting of up to 10 pounds and periodic walking or standing for brief periods.
Veteran PreferenceVeterans who are honorably discharged and have served more than 180 consecutive days, or have served during wartime, are given preference in the application process. Applicants must identify themselves as veterans, attach a copy of their DD‑214, DD‑215, or NGB‑22 at application and interview time, and provide original discharge papers.
