Job Summary

The Superintendent, Bus Maintenance, is a mid-level management position responsible for supporting safe, courteous, clean, convenient, comfortable, reliable, cost-efficient, and on-time transportation for customers through effective leadership and oversight of bus maintenance. Under the direction of leadership, this role aligns fleet maintenance programs, compliance requirements, and resources to support service reliability and customer experience.

Job Responsibilities
  • Leads department staff of employees, contractors, and other Metro departments in support of efficient lifecycle asset management of the bus fleet.
  • Develops and implements vehicle maintenance policies and programs for transit vehicles, including management and support of Federal Transit Administration (FTA) related activities, including Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan (PTASP), Safety Management Systems (SMS), FTA Safety Bulletins and Advisories, FTA State of Good Repair, and FTA Transit Asset Management.
  • Monitors and manages cleaning contracts for compliance and performance.
  • Provides oversight and direction to a department of supervisors, directing maintenance and repair activities to ensure the responsible maintenance and repair of the fleet of transit vehicles.
  • Develops and mentors department staff and maintains a safe, professional, collaborative work environment that supports employee performance.
  • Makes verbal and written recommendations to Senior Metro Management and provides detailed analysis to support recommendations.
  • Participates as a member of the maintenance committee to plan an overall Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) strategy for fleet maintenance.
  • Takes appropriate action concerning internal and external customer complaints.
  • Plans and organizes work programs, establishes and monitors controls to evaluate unit performance, and takes appropriate action to correct performance and adjust programs to meet requirements.
  • Collaborates with Metro management to coordinate and expedite bus repair, maintenance, and servicing.
  • Develops plans to meet unexpected situations, new developments, and changes in the business environment; prepares for emergencies; anticipates events; understands factors and conditions affecting the organization; and responds appropriately when these change.
  • Plan and manage resources by preparing budgets, monitoring expenditures, and procuring materials and operating equipment to support maintenance operations.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable policies, rules, regulations, and laws; stays abreast of legal, regulatory, and policy developments affecting areas of responsibility; and enforces legal and regulatory requirements impartially.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to direct the work of supervisory staff.
  • Knowledge of modern management and supervisory techniques.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of methods, materials, and analytical techniques used in a major fleet repair and overhaul facility and at station garages.
  • Knowledge of maintenance procedures, inventory control, technical project management, and labor relations in a union-shop environment.
  • Ability to apply strong analytical skills to evaluate maintenance performance, risks, and operational needs.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of bus maintenance and repair activities.
  • Ability to learn and apply Agency regulations and the Union contract.
  • Ability to establish policies and procedures and evaluate program effectiveness.
  • Ability to prepare and administer a budget.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Work Environment

  • General office conditions.
  • Fleet maintenance shop and depot environments with exposure to noise, dust, and moving equipment.
  • Occasional use of required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Physical Abilities
