- Under general supervision, cleans teeth, examines head, neck, and oral areas for signs of oral disease.
- Educates clients on oral hygiene; develops X-rays; applies fluoride or sealants.
- May serve as lead hygienist.
- Observe and document conditions in mouth and gums; take X-rays.
- Apply fluoride and other cavity-preventing agents to arrest dental decay (varnish, sealants).
- Perform screenings, fluoride treatments, and cleaning of deposits and stains from teeth and beneath gum margins.
- Examine gums with probes to locate sores, periodontal recession, and signs of gum disease; check lymph nodes for swelling or tenderness that could indicate oral cancer.
- Provide oral hygiene instructions; explain procedures to patients and assist with paperwork.
- Coordinate with schools, Head Start, YMCA to set up events; coordinate Dental Quiz Bowl events and prepare event paperwork and databases.
- Provide dental school screening; deliver clinical services and health education to clients and/or staff to improve oral health.
- Create PowerPoint presentations and provide education for health fairs, school career days, Red Ribbon events; present at parent-teacher meetings in schools.
- Assist the dentist with X-rays and exams; maintain operatory cleanliness and sterilization; prepare and stock trays and supplies.
- Inform staff when supplies are low; visit DCBOH dental clinics for infection control; update forms as needed.
- Chart conditions of decay and disease for diagnosis and treatment by dentist.
- Provide front desk assistance when needed; complete continuing education classes (virtually and in person); maintain infection control knowledge per CDC, HIV, ADA guidelines.
- Associate's degree in dental hygiene from an accredited college or university; current Georgia dental hygienist license; two years of related experience.
- OR one year at the lower level Dental Hygienist 2 (HCT
011) or position equivalent.
