The Bio Medical Specialist is a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and provides clinical equipment services under minimal supervision of management. Duties include but are not limited to: perform calibrations and repairs on equipment as assigned. Demonstrate knowledge of safe and approved troubleshooting techniques on medical devices. Read schematics and service manuals, consult with vendors and service representatives to assist in troubleshooting.
Utilize test equipment and complete complex repairs in a time- and cost-effective manner with patient safety as the primary focus. Document work performed and any significant performance data accurately and in a timely manner. Provide leadership during project planning and equipment implementations. The Team Leader also serves as an advisor to administrative, medical, and clinical staff in the safe use and proper operation of clinical equipment and aids in the selection process for new equipment.
Operates as part of a team of engineers responsible for providing in-depth technical knowledge required to implement, manage, upgrade and support many applications and interoperability into EPIC and other repositories.
- Responds to service calls to evaluate, diagnose, and perform corrective and preventive maintenance on complex biomedical equipment in the Specialist field of discipline.
- Coordinate work performed by service contractors and vendors, including maintenance and inspection, repair, calibration, installation and performance verification and completion of documentation of service.
- Serve as a technical advisor to clinical personnel in the purchase of new instrumentation, designing of new systems, and modifying systems to meet special needs.
- Perform installation and deinstallations of equipment and other special projects.
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge of required safety precautions in the operation and maintenance of clinical equipment.
- Coordinate with Well Star IT in support of planning, installation and servicing of integrated medical devices and systems into EPIC and other repositories.
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge of internet protocols and networked systems.
- Update/install medical equipment to include security protocols and work with customers to provide design solutions maintaining technical and application standards.
- Work closely with all engineers across teams including Biomedical Engineering, Desktop Support, Systems and Network Engineering.
- Document all repair, maintenance, installation, and other activity in a timely fashion using the department's equipment management software and other mechanisms as needed.
- Prepare and present instructional material and conduct training in the techniques and methods of operation, problem diagnosis, and safe operation of medical systems for physicians, nurses, and allied health personnel.
- Serve as a customer relations representative for the department, correcting service deficiencies within the position’s scope of responsibility and relaying other issues to the Program Manager.
- Maintain working knowledge of and appropriate interaction with other support departments necessary for performing the Bio Medical Department function within the position's scope of responsibility and relaying other issues to the Program Manager.
- Maintain knowledge of current regulations and compliance standards for medical equipment and technology developments.
- Contribute to System/Facility/Department Quality & Performance Improvement efforts.
- Perform delegated functions of the Bio Medical Engineering Department as delineated in the Medical Equipment Management Program Policies and Procedures Manual.
- Ensure proper care of department, facility and peer tools and exercise judicious use of department parts, supplies and other resources.
- Perform other duties as assigned and comply with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
Minimum Education
- Associates Biomedical Engineering
All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.
