Role Overview
The assistant nurse manager is a registered professional nurse who provides support and works in conjunction with the nurse manager of a specific unit(s) or service. This role is designed to prepare an individual to become a nurse manager by gaining knowledge and skills through experience and mentoring. The assistant nurse manager should possess strong communication and teamwork skills and serve as a mentor while learning the responsibilities of the role.
Working with the nurse manager, this position helps promote a center of excellence for staff recruitment and retention and for clinical and business outcomes. The assistant nurse manager upholds the nurse manager’s direction, leads staff in daily activities, and participates in performance reviews, coaching, and counseling as appropriate. In collaboration with the nurse manager, the assistant nurse manager holds staff accountable for delivering care and services through effective communication, observation, and the management and measurement of interventions and outcomes.
This leader assists the nurse manager in achieving clinical and financial goals and in managing human/material resources as delegated. The role also involves staff recruitment, mentoring, and retention, and models teamwork and collaboration with physicians, staff, patients, and other departments. Role-specific competencies, responsibilities, roles, and functions are based on the Professional Practice Model, 5 Star Nursing. It is expected that all RN Assistant Nurse Managers are licensed, knowledgeable, and uphold nursing practice as outlined by the Georgia Professional Nurse Practice Act and the Scope of Practice and Code of Ethics Standards of the American Nurses Association.
As a member of the patient services team, the individual upholds the voice of the patient and adheres to system policies and procedures while supporting service excellence goals.
- Resources and Support
- Engages staff in decision making via shared governance processes and partners with others to promote patient-centered care and service excellence. Supports the nurse manager as designee and provides evolving leadership for a specific unit(s).
- Represents the organization positively to the community and is a member of professional organizations.
- Supports the charge nurse and other nurse leaders to promote effective operation of the care delivery system and serves as a resource for all staff in the nurse manager’s absence.
- Assists with budget development and supports monitoring and achieving fiscal outcomes for the work unit. Learns how to apply lean and other quality skills to reduce waste and improve operational and clinical performance.
- Interdisciplinary Teamwork and Collaboration
- Effectively communicates to a diverse workforce and mentors others while developing progressive nursing management skills. Works with the nurse manager to hold all staff at the point of care accountable for performance standards.
- Creates opportunities for staff growth and fosters a healthy, safe, desirable workplace to aid retention and recruitment of qualified staff.
