As a Fuel Accountant
, you’ll join a tight-knit, high-performing accounting team that supports fuel usage, power transactions, derivatives, and regulatory accounting. This role offers broad exposure across energy trading, power generation, and compliance, along with the opportunity to work closely with trading, risk, operations, and executive stakeholders.
The team operates in a hybrid model
, with two days per week in the Austin office and three days remote, balancing flexibility with connection and collaboration.
- Manage accounting for fuel usage at generation plants, including purchased power and plant fuel activity
- Perform accounting and analysis for derivatives, hedging activities, ERCOT power purchases, and power transactions
- Maintain general ledger accounts related to fuels, power, and plant operations
- Prepare and review moderately complex journal entries, schedules, work papers, accruals, and reconciliations
- Reconcile fuels, derivatives, and plant sub-ledgers to the general ledger and identify interface or control issues
- Perform financial statement variance and fluctuation analysis, clearly documenting findings and conclusions
- Research and apply GAAP and regulatory accounting requirements in a compliance-driven environment
- Support regulatory reporting and internal compliance initiatives
- Assist with oil and gas royalty accounting and provide backup support across accounting areas due to the team’s lean structure
- Review journal entries prepared by other staff in accordance with materiality and internal guidelines
- Analyze accounting processes and internal controls, and recommend and support process improvements
- Update accounting policies and procedures and assist with internal control evaluations
- Support monthly and annual close, mid-year and year-end audits, and audited financial statement preparation
- Serve as a liaison to internal and external auditors
- Provide mentoring, training, and day-to-day guidance to other accounting staff
What YOU Need to SUCCEED in This Dynamic Role
Required
- 6+ years of accounting experience in a complex, regulated, or compliance-driven environment
- Strong working knowledge of GAAP
- Demonstrated experience with regulatory accounting or compliance requirements
- Advanced Excel proficiency, including working with large datasets and complex reconciliations
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to partner effectively across teams
Nice to Have
- Experience in utilities, energy, power generation, or related industries
- Exposure to derivatives, hedging, or energy trading environments
- ERCOT or power market experience
- Oil and gas accounting experience
- Familiarity with deal capture or energy trading systems (Allegro Horizon a plus)
