Position: TxDMV - Accountant (Austin, TX)

General Description

Our mission at the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) is to serve, protect and advance the citizens and industries in the state with quality motor vehicle related services. We are a dynamic state agency dedicated to customer service, consumer protection and the success of motor vehicle‑related industries.

This position performs moderately complex (journey‑level) accounting in the Finance & Operations Division, Revenue Section. Work involves processing revenue transactions, reconciling agency revenues, preparing journal transactions, and reporting on outstanding accounts receivable balances. May train others. Works under general supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. This position reports to the Revenue Manager.

Essential Duties
  • Prepare and monitor accounts receivable billings for program areas.
  • Provide technical support to accounts receivable projects and initiatives.
  • Reconcile revenue transactions between Uniform Statewide Accounting System (USAS) and Centralized Accounting & Payroll/Personnel System (CAPPS).
  • Review accounting and financial documents from multiple revenue sources for accuracy.
  • Ensure proper documentation is received for payments.
  • Research reconciliation discrepancies and report findings.
  • Assist in making recommendations for improvements, adaptations, or revisions to the accounting system and accompanying procedures.
  • Respond to internal and external customers regarding vendor account inquiries.
  • Classifies, codes, posts, and balances financial and accounting documents and records.
  • Reviews and audits daily deposits and journal vouchers for accuracy and compliance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Assists in sorting, endorsing and batching applications and revenue received in the cash room.
  • Assists in recommending accounting and financial policies and procedures in accordance with statute and professionally accepted standards.
  • May train others.
  • Assist with special projects and perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
  • May travel up to 5% of the time, driving to attend meetings, seminars and conferences; travel may include overnight stays.
  • Required to attend work regularly and adhere to approved work hours.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree with major coursework in accounting, finance, business administration, business management or a related field plus two (2) years’ experience performing accounting tasks, bookkeeping, payment processing, auditing or other general office administration. Desired experience includes use of the Uniform Statewide Accounting System (USAS), Centralized Accounting & Payroll/Personnel System (CAPPS), or another integrated accounting system. Additional experience in accounting, audit or general office administration may substitute for education on a year‑for‑year basis.

(Experience may be satisfied by full‑time experience or the prorated part‑time equivalent.)

Driver's License Requirement

A valid Class “C” driver’s license is required. If not currently a Texas resident, the applicant must obtain a Texas Driver’s License within ninety (90) days after moving to Texas. A satisfactory driving record is required.
