The Texas General Land Office is seeking an Accountant VI within the Financial Management Department of the agency.
The employee performs advanced and/or supervisory (senior‑level) accounting work. Work involves preparing and/or overseeing the preparation of financial analyses and reports; establishing, maintaining, and/or overseeing accounting systems, procedures, and controls; and preparing and/or overseeing the preparation of agency budgets. May assign and/or supervise the work of others. Works under minimal supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

What Your Contributions To The GLO Will Be- Prepares and reviews financial statements, general ledger entries, and program expenditure reports to ensure accuracy and compliance with federal and state requirements. Coordinates the development, planning, and timely submission of the agency’s Annual Financial Report in accordance with Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) and Office of the Comptroller of Public Accounts requirements. Oversees the analysis of financial data and third‑party financial reviews, including modeling and response monitoring, to support transparency and informed decision‑making.
Coordinates with divisions to support budget development, expenditure forecasting, and reconciliation processes to ensure alignment between financial reporting and operational planning. - Supports the development of team goals, standards, and priorities to align operations with agency objectives. Administers financial systems and provides expert interpretation on complex financial and regulatory compliance issues. Monitors financial activities and budget execution to ensure compliance with laws, internal procedures, and spending limits, while maintaining accurate and well‑documented records.
- Develops and implements accounting policies and procedures that meet statutory and professional standards. Participates in the review of internal guidelines and leads or supports oversight activities to ensure compliance with accounting standards, financial policies, and conduct expectations. Represents the Financial Reporting and Accounting division in meetings and external collaborations to support consistent and effective policy application.
- Identifies areas for operational improvement and recommends changes to increase efficiency and reduce resource use. Collaborates with IT staff on the design and enhancement of financial systems and tools. Ensures that accounting system improvements support integrated purchasing, disbursement, and reporting functions, and may supervise or provide guidance to financial staff involved in these operations.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with a degree in accounting, finance, or related fields.
- Five (5) years of full‑time advanced accounting, financial analysis, or related experience requiring compilation, reconciliation, and/or analysis of detailed financial information. Education may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis with equivalent experience in general ledger maintenance and/or financial reporting.
- Applicants must clearly demonstrate relevant experience and education that would qualify him/her for the job.
- May be required to periodically work hours greater than 40 hours per week and on weekends.
- A writing sample will be required as part of the pre‑employment assessment.
- Four (4) years experience in preparing related schedules, reports, working papers, and trial balances for a state agency or university.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM).
- Experience with the Comptroller of Public Accounts Uniform Statewide Accounting System (USAS), Centralized Accounting and Payroll/Personnel System (CAPPS), or State Property Accounting (SPA) systems.
