Symetra has an exciting new opportunity to join us as a Financial Reporting Analyst in Investment Accounting and Reporting!

About this Role

Symetra's Investment Accounting department is seeking a Financial Reporting Analyst to support investment accounting, financial close, regulatory reporting, and financial data governance activities. This role will play a key part in ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of investment accounting records across a diverse portfolio including bonds, equities, mortgage loans, derivatives, hedge funds, limited partnerships, and tax credit investments. The position will partner closely with Accounting, Finance, Actuarial, FP&A, Investments, Technology, and third-party service providers to support timely close processes, maintain strong financial controls, and deliver accurate GAAP and Statutory reporting.

In addition to financial reporting responsibilities, this role will serve as a steward of investment accounting data, helping drive data quality, reconciliation, process automation, and continuous improvement initiatives across the organization.

Your Responsibilities
  • Participate in monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting close processes, including preparation of journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and supporting analyses
  • Research, document, and resolve accounting issues related to a diverse investment portfolio, including fixed income securities, equities, mortgage loans, derivatives, alternative investments, and tax credit structures
  • Support GAAP and Statutory financial reporting processes, including preparation of disclosures, schedules, variance analyses, and management reporting deliverables
  • Maintain strong internal controls and support internal and external audit requests, regulatory examinations, and accounting policy compliance initiatives
  • Serve as a steward of investment accounting data by monitoring data quality, performing reconciliations and validation activities, and ensuring the accuracy and completeness of information used in financial reporting and decision-making
  • Partner with Accounting, Investments, Finance, Technology, and external service providers to resolve accounting, operational, and data-related issues and improve end-to-end processes
  • Identify opportunities for automation, standardization, and process improvement, helping enhance the efficiency, scalability, and control environment of the investment accounting function
  • Support business initiatives, system implementations, reporting enhancements, and data governance framework, including documentation of business processes, controls, and reporting requirements
  • Deliver high-quality work products with strong attention to detail, professional judgment, and a commitment to continuous improvement
Requirements
  • BA/BS in Accounting or related field
  • CPA or progress toward CPA preferred
  • Relevant work experience in public accounting, insurance or finance preferred
  • Strong understanding of GAAP accounting principles;
    Statutory accounting knowledge preferred
  • Experience with financial close, reconciliations, account analysis, and internal controls
  • Demonstrated ability to research and document technical accounting matters
  • Ability to work and succeed in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong process improvement skills and the ability to "think outside the box"
  • Knowledge of financial data governance, data quality management, or reporting controls preferred
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify root causes and implement sustainable solutions
  • Highly motivated with a strong desire to exceed expectations, and work in a challenging and fast-paced work environment
  • Desire to work with a team where growth and improvement are encouraged and supported
  • Proven ability to interact effectively and communicate complex investment accounting guidelines and policies in an understandable manner to various levels staff, and external vendors
  • Goal-oriented with a track record of task and project completion.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, as the need arises (quarter and year-ends, ad hoc projects)
