Position: Construction Inspector IV, V or VI: Transportation Operations (Austin District)

This position oversees inspection of construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications; acts as a consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution. Trains others. May lead the work of professional and technical employees. Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for final approval of all engineering-related work.

May perform material tests/manufacturing process inspections at fabrication sites. Work requires contact with other governmental agencies and private entities to include contractors. Employees at this level are virtually self‑supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.

Essential Duties
  • Analyzes procedures to identify deficiencies and recommends improvements to management.
  • Monitors project phasing and traffic control plans and ensures compliance with approved safety standards; inspects barricades.
  • Observes and inspects ongoing construction work.
  • Resolves differences in interpretation of plans and specifications.
  • Documents work progress and issues arising throughout scope of project.
  • Ensures inspectors turn in monthly estimates accurately and timely to facilitate payments to contractors.
  • Trains and mentors less experienced inspectors on work methods.
  • Composes correspondence, reports and supporting documents; files.
  • Coordinates programs and projects to enhance efficiency and streamline operations.
  • May serve as a lead worker or project leader.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Additional responsibilities required for a Construction Inspector V and VI
  • Trains and makes training‑related recommendations to staff on new operations.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
  • Experience:
    • Construction Inspector IV: 3 years experience in construction, maintenance and repairs, construction inspection, engineering support, materials or process inspection; or related experience.
    • Construction Inspector V: 4 years experience in construction, maintenance and repairs, construction inspection, engineering support, materials or process inspection; or related experience.
    • Construction Inspector VI: 5 years experience in construction, maintenance and repairs, construction inspection, engineering support, materials or process inspection; or related experience.
  • Experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent.
  • Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.
Licenses and Certifications

Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

  • Applicable governmental laws, rules and regulations specific to area of responsibility for safeguarding information and information technology related systems.
  • Basic roadway design.
  • Applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements.
  • Methods for reviewing plans and specifications for compliance with requirements.
  • Construction engineering policies and procedures.
  • Reading and interpreting applicable plans, schematics, blueprints and maps.
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others.
  • Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external.
  • Preparing and maintaining confidential and sensitive records, files, and reports.
  • Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems.
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules and regulations.
  • Overseeing and coordinating projects and program activities.
  • Instructing others.
